Update on Raro (Rebecca)'s family
« on: January 16, 2020, 10:01:40 pm »
I don't know how many of you remember our dear Raro who passed from cancer a few years back, but with some clues from Nita and my involvement in the LDS writing community, I have some updates.
What many of you may not know is that Raro was best friends with and inspiration to Traci Hunter Abramson, a former CIA agent who is pretty big in the LDS writing scene (romantic thrillers, mostly). When Rebecca passed, Traci took in her kids. In a conversation in Book Club, Patty asked how her kids were doing, so I asked Traci if she knew about Nauvoo and would feel comfortable sharing updates on the kids. This was her response:

Quote
Rebecca talked about you and those groups all the time. Everyone she corresponded with was very dear to her, and you all helped her more than you can possibly know.

As for the updates, her oldest son and daughter-in-law are living in Utah. Matthew is working and finally figuring out how to make ends meet. They have a little girl who is a bit over a year old. She's named Rebekah after her grandmother (different spelling, but same name.) Mandy is now also in Utah. She still struggles a bit with the emotional turmoil of not having her mom here, especially since she's never really dated, but overall, she's making things work. As for Rebecca's youngest, he is still living with us. Gabriel is a senior this year. He's the captain of the swim team and he plays lacrosse. He has more friends than we can count and is planning to serve a mission this fall for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After that, he's looking at going to BYU-Hawaii for a year with the hope that he can do well enough there to transfer to BYU in Utah. Cyber security is his planned career.

If anyone wants to send messages to Raro's kids through Traci, I can pass them along!
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it

Thank you so much for the update, dyany. I do remember Raro, how beloved she was here & inspirational she was to the Nauvoo Neighbors.

Sometimes I think about those folks who have been & gone, & hope their families are doing OK. People like Hansemann, V, & Raro. Plus neighbors that have moved away - I hope they're well & know they're welcome to drop by anytime.

If enough of us are game, tell her that Nauvoodles will buy Gabriel his mission overcoat too like we did for Matthew.   Glad to hear about them:  I've thought often about how they are doing.

I went and bought two books of Traci from Amazon.  Every little royalty helps. And I would gladly chip in for a coat

I will chip in for a coat, too.  We have 3 contributors so far...at what point do we think is 'enough' to commit so I can tell Traci?

Since I have no idea what the price of an overcoat in the US is, or how much the others are prepared to contribute, it is hard to say. I would be good for upto $20. So, if it's $100 and five will pay $20 - now. If it's $200 and five will pay $20, when we have five more willing to pay $20.

Important note: he may not need an overcoat, if he goes someplace more tropical. But we can cross that bridge when we come to it. Even if we don't get an overcoat, we can get SOMETHING.

I expressed the joy and love regarding the news to Traci and told her we'd be chipping in something, such as an overcoat or whatever is needed. It sounds like it will be at least a few months until the funds are needed, so we have time. :)

He wouldn't be needing the overcoat until at least October anywhere but alaska or finland or russia, I presume.   The reason I like the coat (if he needs one) is a) that he can remember his mother preparing to send it to Matthew, (b) maybe he'll feel as all wrapped up in his mother's love courtesy of her friends in the coat for a lifetime.  c) And it is a tradition he'll share with his brother.    I'd like that and Raro would too.   But if it is something else that he needs, I'm game.

I think the coat that was found for Matthew several years ago was over $200, if I recall correctly: good quality will-wear -for- the rest- of- my- life (so I'd better watch what I eat and exercise) overcoats often are.  And we probably won't even know what kind of one he might need until after this winter and the June men's sales are over.  If there is unmet need at the end, I'll make up the difference up to $300.

I told Traci our plans, here is her response:

That is so sweet. Iíll certainly keep you up to date when he gets to that point. I know he will be so touched to know he still has a village who is cheering for him to succeed.

Sorry, I'm late to the party. Thank you for getting that update. I remember Raro fondly. I'll also contribute when the time comes.
