I'm glad you had a positive experience, Cook.

About your negative experience--I don't know why we do that to each other in our church callings.  Callings are volunteer positions.  It's one thing to accept suggestions from a leader about how to improve.  It's quite a different thing to hear someone complain and criticize, even when you're trying to serve them. I've become less tolerant with that kind of nonsense. "If you're going to complain about what I'm doing, then maybe you should volunteer..." I said that once when I taught early morning seminary.
When they realized that getting up at 4:30 every morning to prepare lessons for their child is something they don't want to do themselves, they stopped complaining.

Roper, your comment reminded me of a quote from Elder Holland:

Quote
So be kind regarding human frailty—your own as well as that of those who serve with you in a Church led by volunteer, mortal men and women. Except in the case of His only perfect Begotten Son, imperfect people are all God has ever had to work with. That must be terribly frustrating to Him, but He deals with it. So should we. And when you see imperfection, remember that the limitation is not in the divinity of the work. As one gifted writer has suggested, when the infinite fulness is poured forth, it is not the oil’s fault if there is some loss because finite vessels can’t quite contain it all. Those finite vessels include you and me, so be patient and kind and forgiving.

(Italics added by me.)

So far the first group I wanted to work with no longer has a position available, so I am now awaiting word from the second group. I was last in contact with them in December. They may end up being a better fit, as I won't lose many of the skills I have been working on in the other group.

In other news our baby boy came 3 weeks early. I think he wanted to beef up for the exodus west.

The second group offered me a job.

I am still awaiting my license, then I can apply for a new DEA number in my new state, then I can complete the paperwork for hospital privileges. 3-4 months of torture to go.

What I thought was a tender mercy, that MD emailing to take my place and work for my group the very next day, he changed his mind. He is not coming. This reinforces my hesitance to call something a tender mercy or divine intervention too early.

Sometimes it takes time to determine what indeed is a tender mercy. What to us my seem to be unanswered prayer, may instead be what the Lord intends. Most people on facebook are familiar with Humans of New York. Here is his story. What started out as a loss (and to one religious, maybe an unanswered prayer) turned instead to be a blessing to many worldwide.

Jason, if I seemed in any way to be dismissive of your trials, I wasn't trying to be.  Killer hours, a stressful job, new baby, moving, looking for a new job - any one of those by itself is an extreme trial. To have them all, I cannot imagine the stress you are under. I do hope that in some future date you will be able to look back and find one or two tender mercy during this time period.

*taps mic* is this thing on?

So, I think I've mentioned elsewhere that for a while I was struggling with tithing. I've been good for the last 18 months or so, though. And I've been working really hard to let God prevail in my life.

Last week we were in a consignment store looking for other things, and I saw a couple of antique secretary desks. I'm a sucker for old-fashioned things particularly in regards to writing, so I've loved secretary desks for a very long time. I saw them, sighed, and moved on. It was not what we were there for, and money isn't such that we could do that sort of thing. I didn't think much of it after that.
But Saturday morning a counselor in our RS presidency let us know that a new sister in the ward had some things she wanted to give to 'good homes.' And one of them was an antique secretary desk.

I contacted the sister, and she sent photos. Yes, it could use a little refinishing, but it has all the drawers and knobs and doors. And I asked how much she wanted for it.

She just wants to get rid of it, so it's totally free.

I'm ready to cry at the tender mercy of it. I didn't even ask for it. I don't feel like it's something I need, at ALL, but it was like Heavenly Father said, "Hey, I know you've been really trying hard and I can't take away your other challenges right now but here's a little present for trying so hard."

Tender mercies indeed!

When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it
