Religious Freedom and Non-discrimination
« on: November 16, 2021, 09:12:38 am »
President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency gave a speech entitled "Going Forward with Religious Freedom and Non-discrimination" at the University of Virginia last week. He remarked that it was, “the most difficult address I have ever undertaken.” Quite a statement from a former Utah Supreme Court Justice and an Apostle. He has has declared rulings in the courtroom and spoken to millions of saints in General Conference. And this address was his most difficult.

Here is a summary of the speech and an editorial by Jana Riess:

What an excellent speech.

We need to have some compassion for the others' needs and viewpoints.  "My Rights" don't ALWAYS need to trump all others.

This is why I think I could absolutely sell and even design flowers for a same sex marriage, or bake a cake (perhaps even with a same couple topper, but if I couldn't I would sell the different couple toppers for them to set themselves), attend in support, even if I couldn't participate in the ceremony,  without feeling like I've compromised my faith.

"Another basic imperative is that we should not seek total dominance for our own position; we should seek fairness for all. ... The goals of both sides are best served by resolving differences through mutual respect, shared understanding, and good faith negotiations. And both must accept and respect the rule of law."

and...

"I caution against primary reliance on judicial rulings to ultimately resolve these conflicts. What is needed is wise public policy, not a declaration of the winner in a legal contest. Litigation should not be the first recourse in resolving our differences."

In other words, work together in mutual respect to resolve conflicts. Stop using the judicial system to beat each other into submission.
