what if...
« on: November 06, 2021, 06:07:33 am »
Now, first I want to say that this is not what I believe. Just passing some wonderings.

It was kind of provoked by a discussion about certain things we church members take seriously. More seriously than others, when it used to be the other way in some things.

Like many are hang up with polygamy. Even furious that it ever existed. Thinking that it is absolutely wrong and could not be of God. (Not declaring anything about the origin of the practise). It shakes their faith. For many in the world it is still a normal practise. Many -with or without marriage- are having open relationships and polygamist and more and more polyamorist relationships. In the eyes of the world it no longer is weird or unacceptable.

Or like many think the idea of women having priesthood offices is of the devil (not taking sides here, nor saying which I think is right or wrong) while the world has had "priesthood" passed to women in many churches. Where as in the olden days in our church women had more role than in the other churches of the era.

And so forth.

I do think an open mind is important when dealing with things of God.

So I was reading the poems of Enheduanna, the first known female author, Sumerian, from 23. century BC I believe. She was a priestess to some female God. Much of the language, the rythm and the ways with the words are similar to the Bible.

Which led me to think about Biblical times, about Nephi and Asherah (a Canaanite goddess) and about how the people were told to not worship idols and "wrong" God's. I thought about how the God's in ancient Greece were multiple, both genders, as well as in a place closer to me, Norway,  Thor, Loki and the other fun guys from Marvel and all the rest - quite a few, both genders. Many mythologies have them.

And I thought - as we know Elohim is actually a plural form though often used as a singular The God. Some argue that the Israelite view of Gods turned to the God at some point.

What if actually, in the beginning of the world the "truth" was gods and goddesses? But people just couldn't handle it, misused it etc. So it had to be turned into a one male god thought.

We know there are many Gods, many heavenly Fathers - perhaps only one for this world though. We know there are many goddesses, heavenly mothers - one or more for this world. So if that would be the case, that the mythologies actually have some truth in them- would we be shocked if that was revealed?

So I am not saying this is the case. And if it was the case, I don't really see any reason why it would be one day revealed to a prophet.

But are we sometimes too tightly thinking of our doctrines?

We already have the truth that we have a Heavenly Mother. We already teach the truth that in the eternities there are Kings and Queens--Priests and Priestesses. I don't have a good answer why our current practices don't perfectly align with the truth we have. My best guess is that we're not yet ready for a big change in practice because we're not yet fully obedient to the truth we already have on the subject.

“The diversity we find now in the Church may be just the beginning. Frankly, I think we will see greater and greater diversity. … [T]he fact that people can bring different gifts and perspectives and the wide range of variance and backgrounds and challenges that people face will show us what really is essential in the gospel of Christ. And that much of the rest, that has been perhaps acquired over time and is more cultural than doctrinal, can slip away, and we can really learn to be disciples.” -Elder D. Todd Christofferson
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it
