Thanksgiving + supply chain issues
« on: October 24, 2021, 07:35:05 pm »
I saw an article this morning that mentioned that turkeys are going to be hard to come by this year because of all the issues with supply chain--some COVID-caused, some hacker-caused. I've been shocked at how much the cost of groceries has already gone up this year! And I feel extra super grateful that between stimulus payments and a feeling of urgency, we have put in 2 very nice raised beds in the last 2 years and have been able to grow a decent amount of food. This has helped 4 fold: 1. it's therapeutic for me to work in the garden. 2. Being put on a lifetime low-carb diet has been a blessing which is easier when I can grow more of the veggies I like and can eat. 3. Nationwide recall of onions due to salmonella contamination? Good thing I have a mega ton of onions I happened to grow this year! 4. As prices have gone up, I was able to keep my costs under some control.

I also feel blessed because we have a local farmer (same place I get my garden plants from in the spring) who raises turkeys (absolutely free range) and you can pre-order from them. It's fairly expensive, because small local usually is, but I pre-ordered this year anyway (because fresh turkeys cook WAY faster and are extra super tasty). And now I don't have to worry about further price increases, shortages, or supply chains.

I thought Mirk especially might appreciate this. Growing your own isn't always possible, but knowing and supporting local sources can be a big help when the over-mechanized world starts to SNAFU.

When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we're brave enough to see it
If only we're brave enough to be it

My son works for a grocery store. He passed on the discussions going on about supply issues.  The consensus seems to be that we will see shortages by Thanksgiving, particularly in the baking goods area.

In Sri Lanka, they're already facing severe food shortages. They had price controls for basic goods, but that was removed a few months ago due to severe shortages, and prices have already more than doubled. Petrol and cooking gas are also severely short. There are long lines at grocery stores, petrol stations, and at cooking gas outlets. Interestingly enough, the lines at the passport office are even longer.

The government is close to bankrupt. It has no foreign cash reserves, so imports have decreased by a huge amount. It's going to get very very ugly.
