Flooding
« on: July 16, 2021, 01:32:21 am »
Jana, how is your family? Do you know how bad the flooding was in your village. The photos Iíve seen of the floods in Germany are mind boggling- such devastation. You, of course, are in our prayers.

Thank you. We live in a dry spot no where near flood plains nor water.
Our village is in province Utrecht, a couple hours north of the 3 country  meeting point in South Limburg province.

The main town that got flooded there was Valkenburg  in NL but there were dike breaches in other places along the Geul normally a peaceful tributary.  Those closer to the Maas like Maastricht and Roermond really battled with sandbags and military help to keep some water damage at bay. But it is bad.

Sadly, this area is hard hit by the last two years. All three countries are dependent tourism in this lovely hilly paradise of the Ardennes  region.

So a roaring torrent of mud and sewerage  did nothing to help the  lower end  streets of cafes, restaurants and  historic caves which feed families running the tours.

We have reservations four 4 nights next week in Valkenburg.  Today we will make some calls to see  if roads are opened, supply chains reestablished, power is turned on, walking routes accessible.   Our hotel seems to be open for business.  (edited: our hotel was called this morning. They are not accepting guests today.  And they did not inform us. Tragedy tourists who come to gawk are being fined. Good. Since the damage will not be gone by tomorrow we are going up north to the wonderful island of Ameland.   Once I get himself in the sea, he will cheer up. We had to cancel our visit with our friend with long COVID, who is a best buddy scientist.  We will go in August or October, I think.)

We want to make sure we will not be disaster tourists. that we will not be a hindrance.  but one of our goals was to help the economy  a bit.  So  we wait. (edited: until August or October)

We might not be able to visit Aachen another purpose of our jaunt, to see the cathedral and Charlemagne gravesite.  or go into Belguim  because Luik is still under water. (edited: we still want to visit. but it is now on the later list)
No one has died on our side of the border. But there are many deaths in Germany and some in Belgium...

If we has gone this week we would have had yet another crazy travel story....but those poor locals.....it is hard to watch them weep over the ruins of their homes and livelihoods.

My cousin and her family in Liege were displaced and are now looking for a new home. I've seen some devastating pictures from the area. Most of my Belgian family are further west, thankfully.
