I listened to President Oakes talk last night and didn't really hear anything controversial or groundbreaking as far as church doctrine goes.  Perhaps it is an attempt to draw people back who have been practicing their politics with a religious fervor.

Sadly, from what I and some family members have seen, those 'who have been practicing their politics with a religious fervor' cherry picked the statements they wanted to hear and now feel even more justified.

Yep. It's like all the lessons based on the Family Proclamation about divine roles of mothers and fathers, and almost everyone ignores the part which follows: "In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation." And when those parts are brought up, they are dismissed with, "Well, what that really means is (insert dogmatic interpretation to reinforce exclusive roles.)"

Selection bias is strong in Mormon culture.

Quote
lots of governing documents across the world used the US Constitution (notably to break up duties and to assure basic human rights) when they formed their own ruling documents.

But, and probably most notably, not the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. We have been around for quite a bit longer. And little of the US Constitution applies to us with our Constitutional Monarchy and Parliamentary system of Government.

Yes Andrew, indeed, the Netherlands first constitution dates to the 1500's , the most modern takes its cues from the French,  the law system is different from the US and, the government is a constitutional monarchy  that behaves in  many ways .ike a social democracy.
