The 25th anniversary of...
« on: September 18, 2020, 07:37:26 pm »
...my military commission. 25 years ago, I graduated from the Academy of Military Science and was commissioned as an Air Force 2nd Lieutenant. I then went to intel school at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo TX. It was a surreal experience. It was right when things were heating up in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and NATO was carrying out the bombing campaign in Bosnia. Scott O'Grady was patrolling the no-fly zone when he got shot down by a Russian surface to air missile, which had a capability we didn't know about yet--the ability to launch "blind" and then the ground-based target tracking radar would turn on for the last few seconds of terminal guidance, effectively bypassing our F-16's countermeasures.

In intel school, we had to practice giving current intelligence briefings every morning to the command staff. The briefings were focused on the current geopolitical situation. The morning before I briefed, my buddy had mistakenly said the SA-6 which shot down O'Grady used a "Fire Dome" radar. SA-6 uses the "Straight Flush" radar. SA-11 uses Fire Dome. So, to help me remember the key points of my upcoming briefing (we weren't allowed to use notes), I made up a little song using the tune of "This Old Man."

This old Serb likes guts and blood
Buries the Croats in the mud
With a JICPAC, Pijesak, send the bombs to Rome,
SA-11 has a Fire Dome

Update on the Serbs conducting mass executions and dumping the bodies in pits, a key piece of intel from the Joint Intelligence Center-Pacific about Russian involvement on the Serbian side, troop movements near Han Pijesak, a town on the border of the conflict, a terrorist threat against the Vatican, and a clarification about the target tracking radar used with great effectiveness against our F-16s.

See how effective music is? 25 years later, and I still remember  :)

Thank you Roper. Always a public servant, whether as an Air Force officer, a teacher, or a hall monitor & peacekeeper at Nauvoo.  ;)

I just read this. So, sorry it's a late reply.
