MotoGP is weird this year
« on: August 18, 2020, 09:00:30 pm »
Marc Marquez, the most talented rider in a generation, is out with injuries from a freaky crash on the first race of the season. Sunday, in Austria, a RIDERLESS bike continued running parallel to the track, hit an embankment, and almost T-boned Rossi, another uber-talented rider. Dovizioso, who announced he is leaving the Ducati team, won at Austria on his Ducati. Mir, who has been quiet all season, made the podium for Suzuki, who have been quiet for many seasons.  This is going to be an interesting year...

I know absolutely nothing about what you said, but you made it all sound very interesting!

Thanks, Sparky. There are only two sports I like watching--motorcycle racing and the track and field events at the Olympics. Interestingly (or not so interestingly,) those correspond to sports I actually participated in. I like watching them because I have an appreciation of the work and talent it takes to compete in those sports. I don't watch football or baseball because, well, I never played those sports competitively. Basketball was only one year.

I suppose it's like looking at Crowgirl's quilts. I can admire the design, but I don't really know what it takes to make a quilt, so I don't have the same appreciation for her work as Jana and others have.

To ride a 260 horsepower machine which weighs 350 pounds, and can accelerate 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds, 0-120 mph in 4.5 seconds, and can reach 220 mph on long straight sections of track, with lean angles so extreme that riders drag their ELBOWS in corners, all with other bikes only inches away and going just as fast--that takes otherworldly skill. I've never ridden like that, but I sure enjoy watching it  8)

Yikes! I don't think I could bear to watch that! Too much possible excitement in a bad way! I'd be scared to watch the whole time.

On Sunday, Maverick Vinales (Spain, Monster Energy Yamaha) got off the bike at 230 kph after the brakes failed. He slid down the track and was mostly okay--hurt shoulder. The bike didn't fare as well. MotoGP bikes are valued at about $2 million, but they're really considered priceless by teams because of the amount of super-precise custom engineering and tuning that goes in.

Again, MotoGP weirdness. I blame COVID.  ;)
