Title: New Weird News Thread
Post by: Curelom on July 28, 2017, 06:35:02 pm
I closed the old "Weird" thread because it was getting old & it was time for a fresh start.

Here was the old one, in case anyone wants to see what we once considered weird:
http://nauvoo.site/forum/index.php?topic=247.0

If you had just bought a $288,000 vehicle an hour ago, how would you handle it on the way home? Would you be eager to put it through its paces & see what it was capable of, or would you be extra cautious? If you chose something specialized like a turbo-charged high performance car, a 4wd vehicle, a vintage car, or a car with (for Americans) a complex manual transmission or (for non-Americans) automatic transmission, by any chance would you have asked the dealer for special instructions or practice time in a safe area before going out on the street?

I don't know what this new owner did, but something went awfully wrong. :(

Another "what if." What if you had a medical emergency, & it would cost over $50,000, & you couldn't afford it but knew about it far enough ahead to raise the money? (yeah, I know ::) ). If you were in San Francisco - no problem, but not for obvious reasons. It has nothing to do with health insurance, but the fact that San Francisco is in the throes of a car burglary epidemic (49% increase in the past year) with 5-6 dozen each day (just those reported to police).

http://m.sfgate.com/crime/article/San-Francisco-identity-theft-medical-procedure-12306769.php

If this whole story sounds fishy to you, I'm not surprised. Some commenters on the reader forum are leery too.

You don't have to read this one if you don't want to. It almost sounds like clickbait, like the stories of record-setting long fingernails or cats with eight toes on one foot. But have you ever wondered what can happen to all the hair that comes off people's heads as they wait for trains, & keeps accumulating on the tracks of your electric light rail system? Me neither. But someone has.   ::)

Now this story is worth laughing about, because someone committed a theft & they are going to get a huge surprise. And no one is going to get blown up or otherwise have grave bodily harm done to them. But it would be a hoot to see their reaction when they open their prize! :D

You can’t make this stuff up.

You’re trapped in the Burger King restroom for an hour & traumatized. You & the employees can’t get the door unjammed & a locksmith is needed. The management compensates by offering you free food for life, then you claim they reneged on their promise. Lawsuit results. How does it end?

Not so much weird news as sad news:

As many of you know, Utah passed the Medical Cannabis Act last November. My niece, who is in high school, had a part time job delivering lettuce for a local farm. My neice is now out of a job because the farm just tore out their entire lettuce crop and re-planted with marijuana. An alfalfa farm near my wife's parents did the same thing with their alfalfa fields. I wonder how many people didn't realize that food crops would be replaced with marijuana when they voted for the Cannabis Act. <Sigh> I suppose it's better than Utah's market being slammed by the "Big Weed" growers from out of state...
Title: Re: New Weird News Thread

This is happening a lot in California. Since we're the nation's salad bowl, & there are dozens of food crops where 90% or more of the country's supply is grown in California, this will certainly affect the prices of food (for people or livestock & other domestic animals) just as it puts people out of work.

A similar thing happened awhile back when a lot of agricultural land was turned to growing wine grapes. I have friends in the Sonoma Valley who had an apple orchard, & they got an offer to turn to land to wine grapes that they couldn't turn down.

Dear Abby,

How can I get my grandkids to spend more time with me? I am a grandma in her 90s and I know I only have so many years left. My husband and I generously invited them to a wonderful holiday at our country estate, but my granddaughter-in-law thought it was more important to traipse off to a sporting event half a world away where one of her friends was participating. Yes, my grandson and their child came, but I think it was rude and inconsiderate for his wife to beg off. This has upset me so much that I asked our other family and friends not to mention these ungrateful young people in my presence. Some of the family think I’m too demanding and not giving the “kids” enough space. What do you think, Abby, am I right that I should expect my grandchildren to humor me a little in my old age? After all, they have decades ahead of them to go jetting around the world once I kick off.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Abby,

We are a couple in our 30s who recently became parents. My grandparents, especially grandma, are really doting and love to spend time with their great-grands, and they’re constantly wanting us to go on holidays with them, pose for pictures with them, and so on. We were recently invited to join the rest of the family at my grandparents’ stuffy old estate out in the sticks, but instead my wife went overseas to attend an event where one of her good friends was performing. Grandma tells us she only has so many more years to enjoy her little ones, and now we feel selfish, ungrateful, and guilty. Even worse, she told other family members that she doesn’t want them to mention us in her presence. Are we expecting too much to want to go on occasional outings with only our immediate family? Or are we horrible children for feeling that Grandma is smothering us?

I figured it would be good for a laugh. And if anyone reads advice columns, which I do now & then mostly for entertainment, you know that Abby, Amy, Harriette, etc. get supposedly real letters from supposedly real people asking questions like those.

Does it seem to anyone that many, even most of the questions in "Agony Aunt" letters could be resolved by the people themselves if they would stop & think for a few minutes? Or many of them are none of the letter writers' beeswax or are just plain ridiculous? Some of those letters seem to be a sign of people’s growing helplessness & inability or reluctance to think for themselves. Examples:

Quote
DEAR ABBY: My cousin recently married a lovely girl, someone he'd been dating for a couple of years. Our whole family loves her, and she's always been very sweet to us.

She's very intelligent and kind, but the issue is her wardrobe. She's pretty but refuses to wear nice clothes. Instead she wears baggy, boring clothes. Our family is fashion-conscious, and I know my cousin has suggested to her several times that she buy new clothing -- to no avail. He thinks she's self-conscious about her body.

Her birthday is coming up, and my sister and I would like to take her shopping as a birthday gift to buy her some nicer clothes. My cousin thinks she might not appreciate it, but he agrees that she needs new clothes. He also suggested buying her a gift card to somewhere, although that wouldn't solve the problem of which clothes she buys with it. Do you think that taking her clothes shopping for her birthday would be appropriate? -- FASHIONISTA IN CONNECTICUT
and

Quote
Dear Annie: I met the man of my dreams at the workplace. At the time, I was in an abusive marriage and had given up all hope, and then I met "Howard."

Here's the problem: Howard is 45, still lives in his parents' basement and works from home. He doesn't pay rent or utilities, although when he gets a paycheck, he gives his mother some money. On the other hand, my daughter and I have our own place. We make ends meet. Howard bought me a laptop for my birthday and a bedroom set for my apartment, has fixed my car and recently put new tires on it.

He has done so much for me, and I am grateful. But because he still lives with his parents, it limits what we can do. He says he is obligated to his mother, daughter and grandchildren. His job sends him on extended trips to other countries where he sometimes spends four months at a time. He says this job looks good on his resume.

I am also aware that Howard has a drug addiction, and I hate it with a passion. We drink together, and it's all a fun thing, but then he gets forgetful and confuses me with some of the other women he's been with. When I ask whom he's talking about, he starts yelling that it was before we dated. I trust him, but I don't know how to do things by degrees. All of my heart belongs to him.

Am I being selfish, or is this man so comfortable where he is that I come in second? -- Need Your Opinion

A court in Michigan ruled that customers who had their tires rotated at a shop, & were hurt in an accident because the mechanic forgot to tighten the lug nuts & a tire fell off, do not have a case. In effect, the mechanic was obligated only to put the tires back on but not make sure the lug nuts were secure.  :o

Another case of "What in the world were they thinking???"  :(

https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/28/us/iowa-gender-reveal-death/index.html

What happened to the old-fashioned idea of having people over for cake & ice cream, or maybe a taco party with a piñata that makes the "reveal" when it breaks open? Or, even better, saving their energy for the fun times to celebrate with baby showers, birthdays, etc. Besides, who are parents to say they're having a girl or a boy, when the child might change gender identity multiple times before even being near puberty?

This is a COVID-related topic, but it seemed just as appropriate in this thread since it isn't about the complexities of the disease or the political issues that it's causing in some places.

What an adventure these young people are having, but they are ready to go home anytime now. They are from Bolivia & were on a European performance tour, & they got stranded in Germany when the travel bans took effect. They have been SIP for more than two months in a 16th century royal castle that they say is haunted, & packs of wolves wander around the grounds.

https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Bolivian-Orchestra-Stranded-in-Haunted-15292404.php

I guess it could be worse. What if they had been giving concerts on one of the Carnival cruise ships?

That was really cool to read about, but the one question I had wasn't answered. WHY are they staying at the castle instead of a hotel or some other place?
Title: Re: New Weird News Thread
Post by: cook on May 26, 2020, 11:06:16 pm
They are staying in a guest house on the premises. Not sleeping in the castle as such. Another article told: In the meantime, only on Monday 18 May could they step inside the castle for the first time, as tours restarted for the public. Before that, they had stayed in the estate’s building and grounds." The article is not good. Here's a better one.

OK, that makes it clearer. The guest house was probably their planned lodging all along while they were performing there. & they got stuck when the travel bans came down. They'll have a great story to tell their own kids some day!

I saw a story about those, & wondered how many people would fully trust the capability of becoming opaque. Can it fail, for instance stop working in the middle of a "visit"?  :o
Title: Re: New Weird News Thread
Post by: Roper on August 20, 2020, 07:10:22 pm
There would need to be something like a body heat sensor, not just a door lock sensor, to turn the walls opaque. I'm sure the designers have already thought about the frat boy pranks of defeating the sensor so that new pledges have to take care of business while fully visible to the outside world.
Title: Re: New Weird News Thread
Post by: Curelom on August 20, 2020, 09:14:02 pm
Yeah, I figured it would have to be designed well to thwart pranksters, because we know there would be pranksters. A heat sensor hadn't come to mind. I did think about something activated by the door lock, maybe electrical, or a photoelectric, ultra-sonic, or motion detector. What about something to detect a person's weight on the floor?

A good feature would be a timer, to keep people from camping out all day. In some cities, public toilets have the locks on timers, so they open automatically after 15 minutes. For these, the timer could be set so the opaqueness is deactivated after a set time. Wouldn't that be fun?  ;D

We stayed in a hotel that had transparent glass for the toilet walls. They did NOT turn translucent. There was no switch or other mechanism to turn them to translucent. It was just the husband and I with no visitors, thankfully. But still, it's a really really really bad design.

If there's a way to turn the walls translucent, fine. Just make sure it works.

I just thought of the perfect name for the see-through toilets:

LOOKY-LOO's.  😲  🤣

For those unfamiliar with U.S. slang, a looky-loo is a gawker, someone who can't help but stare at accidents, who goes to disasters out of morbid curiosity. Folks in the generation before me called them rubber-neckers.

And for the latest in Weird News - these parrots in a British zoo had to be separated because of their scandalous talk. 🦜 They were all donated by owners & put together after completing quarantine, & I guess they picked up each other's bad habits. 🤣

The see-through toilet walls go opaque when they are in use. It's a way to avoid the awkward "is that bathroom in use or is the door just closed?" question.

Of course, since I learned that I could say, "Come back with a warrant!" when people knock on the bathroom door when I'm in there, I find that interaction far more tolerable. ;)

Not all of them, Dyany. We've stayed in hotels with see-through walls that did NOT go opaque when the bathroom was in use, nor was there any switch to make the walls go opaque. It was just the husband and I, so it was okay, but... No.

Eeeek!

Yeah, bringing your phone, laptop, books, knitting, etc. & just parking 🚽 in there for the whole day, leaving only for meals or because someone else is frantically pounding 😬 on the door to use the bathroom.   🤣

I am drinking more water now than normal because I spend so much time at home, but nowhere near a gallon. Maybe a couple of quarts, plus any liquid from foods. It's a healthy habit, but once we're less restricted & I can be out more, or start traveling again, that will have to change. Unless I want to start using Depends, which I don't until I actually need them. 😒

Before Hubs landed in the hosp because of his gall bladder and heart he drank nearly 2 gallons of water a day. I drink about a gallon + a day. What is weird is when I am shopping, as soon as I enter a store I have to use the bathroom. If I am in there for an hour or more I have to go before I check out and leave. The off to the next store, and yep, need to go again as soon as I enter. Doesn't matter if it has only been 5 or 10 minutes since the last trip. My Mom was the same way. New building whether it was a store or Dr's office or the school to see the Principle regarding one of her 5 kids, gotta-go-pee!

Hubby loves our tap water. He says it is sweet and fresh tasting. Comparing it to our tap water in Casa
Grande it is. Nearly any water even including the river water at the 5 mile marker here (that is where the salty ocean water stops and the fresh river water begins) is sweet to him. I think our tap water has way too much chlorine in it so I filter it with a Brita pitcher system, or drink what my refrigerator filters at the Ice - Water on the door.  Since I now have false teeth I can painlessly drink iced water. Tastes great to me.

My oldest sister called water ~ God's Nectar. or H2O of the God's.

I had to convert 1 gallon into a language I understand - it's not quite 4 liters.

I drink that much when we're in a hot climate or it's summer, but in cooler temperatures, I drink much less - around 1.5 to 2 liters a day. But with a caveat - I add sea salt to my first water bottle of the day. If I don't, I'm much more likely to pass out. And drinking too much water can lead to losing more electrolytes than is healthy.

Agreed. I don't usually salt my water (because it's GROSS and I have less chance of drinking it), but when I've had to drink a ton of water, I crave salt and let myself have it.
Title: Re: New Weird News Thread

I got used to the salt water taste. It's my best way of taking in salt quickly. Salt tablets are relatively very expensive whereas sea salt is relatively cheap, plus it's available almost anywhere, so needs must. And there are days when I require much, much more salt - ie, my IBS is also acting up and I'm sweating profusely.

Dyany, the hubs and I having chikungunya in 2006. For the next YEAR, I had to add double to salt to everything for it to taste normal for us. When the inlaws were in town, I was told that I was not allowed to salt the food - my mother in law would instead as they couldn't eat anything that I cooked. It comes back to haunt us every now and then - get a cold and can't taste anything at all for a month or three. Everything tastes like cardboard. One cold, the hubs only this time, could taste spicy but nothing else. So I doused his food in the hottest hot sauce I could find just so he could taste something. And every now and then, usually for days, but sometimes for months, one of us has a broken salt meter - it all tastes fine for me, but for him it's over salted, severely, or vice versa.

Oh the adventures our flawed bodies experience.

For me, the salt water thing works because it's something I need consistently every day and if I added it to the food, it would be too salty for the hubs and... well, the way I do it just works, so I'll stick with it.
Title: Re: New Weird News Thread
Post by: dyany on January 13, 2021, 10:12:27 am
Ah, I forgot about the chikungunya incident!

I try not to salt food too much as I'm cooking (unless the recipe calls for it for other-than-flavor reasons), as I've always considered that a personal preference that is rude for me to dictate. When I crave salt, I only salt my own.
Title: Re: New Weird News Thread
Post by: LMAshton on January 14, 2021, 09:48:24 am
chikungunya aside, he and I - and his entire family - are on the same page as far as salting things go, so I salt as I cook. But on days where I've added the amount of salt I normally add but it still tastes like it's lacking in salt, I get him (or his mother if they're around) to check. Because. You know.

Airports are big places with lots of places to kind of hide, and people to blend in with.   (Less so with the pandemic, of course.   But then there are probably gates that aren't being used and thus bathrooms that aren't being cleaned as often, too.)

Speaking of serial stowaway Marilyn Hartman, she is back in the news. She was arrested while hanging around at O'Hare against a court order that prohibits her from being at airports.

https://www.sfgate.com/travel/article/Woman-with-history-of-airliner-stowaways-arrested-16033015.php?IPID=SFGate-HP-CP-Spotlight

She actually has succeeded a couple of times, once flying from San Jose CA to LAX, another time from Minnesota to Florida, & once even from ORD TO HEATHROW. Most of her recent adventures have been at ORD, & it's easy to see why if their security is so loose that they make it easy for her to stow away on a flight to London.

She is so notorious that she has a Wikipedia entry. I'm sure someone will write a book about her eventually.

This is a really bizarre story. A 46-yo woman is accused of stalking & bullying three teen boys & their families, friends, & others connected with them, for years. This includes not only direct harassment, but also defaming them to others & impersonating them on-line to get them in trouble. They actually had their lives ruined by these activities. A lot of details are not given, but it sounds like a girl who was close to the suspect (daughter or niece?) was romantically involved with the boys & the adult woman retaliated against them. The girl is referred to as “underage” & a “co-conspirator,” so did she actually sic the adult on her past bf’s, or did she go along with the bullying once it started? No mention of charges against her.

https://www.sfgate.com/crime/article/2021-04-SF-woman-cyberstalking-Instagram-FBI-16117772.php

If Mama or Auntie (if that’s the case) did all this, it sounds like ASPD & she needs to get serious mental help as well as time in prison, because this behavior is definitely both criminal & sick. And the young girl who was her “co-conspirator” needs to get straightened out too, because she was taught some terrible attitudes & activities that she needs to unlearn before she has to live & act like an adult.

Here is what some people do out of love.

It isn’t enough for smitten parents-to-be (or is it often the doting grandma with the “rabies”?) to invite everyone over for cake & ice cream for The Reveal. This time it was 80 lbs of explosive in a quarry, cuz the family thought that was the safest place... but the blast was heard for miles, some people thought it was an earthquake, & at least one reported a cracked house foundation. At least no one died. Other such absurdities have ended with a plane crash in Texas, another recently in Mexico that was fatal, explosions that have killed people, a huge wildfire in Arizona where the father was a Border Patrol agent who you'd think would be more safety-aware, & a more recent wildfire in California.

Couple has a fairy-tale love story where they met in high school but were reunited 30 years later, by divine intervention they said. They plan their wedding at their “dream home and estate” which has 9BR, 15 BA, a movie theater, ballroom, bowling lanes, tennis court, gardens, waterfall, & “resort-style pool.” They send invitations calling themselves the Royal Couple & invite guests to the ceremony, “Red Carpet Happy Hour,” & a reception lasting until 2;30 a.m., then brunch the next day with live music. On the big day, the groom & the vendors arrive at the mansion to set up… so guess what?

Did you know that a goldfish's size is limited by the volume of water they live in? The little fish in your home aquarium stay small because their habitat isn't big enough for them to grow much larger. The carp that you see in ponds in Japanese gardens are related to pet goldfish but are raised to be bigger. If you give them unlimited space, this is what might happen.

A dog was left in a car at Walt Disney World for hours while the owner had a fun afternoon. A passerby heard the dog barking at 5:00 p.m., saw an empty bowl & a parking receipt for 11:48 a.m., & called 911. Sheriff’s and fire personnel got the dog out & gave it water, & estimated it could have survived just one more hour confined in the car.

And now read this:
