Help me find the ONE
« on: February 04, 2020, 07:10:38 am »
I use both a laptop and a tablet.
This is because I use split screens a lot.
I like an illuminated keyboard.
so a laptops comes in handy
But I travel with the tablet and bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It is mostly a weight thing.
But I read on my tablet, and study, in bed. not a laptop place for me.
Both the  laptop and tablet are near their sell buy dates, out of space, starting to wear out, cracked screen ....
The pricetag for lightweights and 2 in ones is sobring.
should I just put up with the minor so far disruptions...
in my mind I think spending lots of money on a laptop when one is an old person is sorta a waste....
My phone is a Samsung Note which is clumsy to write anything longer than a sentence.
My Boy found a LenovoFlex 14 inch thru Amazon that he thinks might be ok. but its not available here and the customs make it over 1000 euros.... um no.
I will be in California soon. so I can order there or go to best buy or whatever. it means I have to be careful to have adapters.  but thats not a big deal.

Many of you are computer savvy please chime in.

At work, I have a Microsoft Surface Pro. It functions as a laptop when I'm at my desk, and a tablet when I need to go around to classes or to meetings. I keep a lot of notes on it, but I can work with spreadsheets and documents on it, too. It's really lightweight, it has a detachable keyboard, a stylus, and a touch screen. A few considerations: It only has 128 GB of storage because it's meant to do most things with cloud storage. Actually, that's worked out really well because I can access stuff from home, office, etc. I've started moving a lot of stuff to the cloud. Also, it was a bit pricey: Around $1,000 USD on sale at Costco. But it's still cheaper than a MacBook.

If you only use it for online tools and apps that are available on your phone/tablet as well, I'd suggest a Chromebook. As my second/backup computer, I got something like this - it's a Chromebook with touch, and can flip to use into tablet mode.

If you need to use major applications, it won't work, but if what is available on the Android app market would work for you (as well as using Google apps like Google docs, etc), it could be a great relatively low-cost solution.

Perhaps a tad more info.
I work in chrome and google. I store mostly in the chrome cloud.
I visit here- facebook- gmail- ancestry and church websites. I read on kindle for android.  Thats about it.
When i rep lessons the split screen is for dutch and english windows so when i save to Drive i can print for both language sisters with annotations so they can figure out how to follow the references.....  i dunno how to do spread sheets.
If i have time to ever organize our photos i will do it on the pc. So thats aboutbit
Oh yeah i play a couple games from google play in waiting rooms etc.
Thanks for the input. It gives us a direction.

If you do most things in Chrome and with Google Docs, then a Chromebook like Taalcon suggested will probably give you the most functionality for the least amount of cost. My kids use Chromebooks because that's what their school uses. They've worked exceptionally well for the past few years.

Agree with Chromebooks, except for the dual function/lightness. They aren't heavy laptops in general, and they are CHEAP. I found this one on Best Buy's site: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-spin-11-2-in-1-11-6-touch-screen-chromebook-intel-celeron-4gb-memory-32gb-emmc-flash-memory-sparkly-silver/6211731.p?skuId=6211731 that is both inexpensive and a 2-in-1.

Google actually has a 'pixelbook' that is their official 2-in-1, but it's a lot more expensive (though cheaper than a regular 2-in-1).

I DO recommend upgrading your hardware, if for no other reason than security (new hardware can handle newer updates and software, which makes your machine and data safer).

Microsoft will be releasing the Surface Duo later this year (2020), which might meet your needs, especially the need for split screen, while still being light and portable.

For those that will NEVER use Microsoft, or NEVER use Apple, or NEVER use [insert other brand], most of the products have changed and evolved so much over the years, that the original reasons for not using something are rarely valid anymore. Apple, Microsoft, Google, and others have been broadening their appeal.

Chromebooks can also have two windows open side-by side, so my understanding of what she wants would apply there as well. I do work on my Chromebook that specifically requires having two windows open/being used at once.

Neither chrome nor google is very privacy oriented.   Perhaps what you do doesn't matter so much, but at this moment I wouldn't be getting chrome or google stuff.

I use a laptop because I find typing documents on a tablet uncomfortable.   But I use a 10.2 ipad pro at church.
