I really like this part from the article:

Quote
His research is crucial for the transition to a sustainable society in which efficient lighting and the conversion of sunlight into electricity will play a pivotal role.

What an amazing and well-deserved honor for Andries, and for his amazing wife who has supported and encouraged him all these years.

Thank you for sharing the news, Jana.

Oh my goodness, what a grand honor, & such momentous & meaningful work.

Now I feel a little bit honored that I was able to meet Professor Andries. Jana, you'll need to give us a little summary of his laureate address, even though I probably won't grasp 3% of it!

Curlom, I could not summarize one sentence. He has left me in the dust 20 years ago....I recognize the terms but the usage escapes me it is way too esoteric.  But, the white powder in light tubes, flat screens, solar cells that his work.  He figures out what is best used for what.

also quantum cutting, quantum dots, up and down conversion and um, lanthanides also is his thing.

I remember Roper being fascinated by what Gogle brought up.
Perhaps you would also like a gander.  Oh and the images go back 30 years to his undergrad days.. Thank goodness he has grown into his face!

Professor Doctor Andries Meijerink, Phd. of Utrecht University Debye Institute....that ought to get a million hits.

The first time I found his curriculum vitae on line, I tried to read it, and my eyes crossed.

Five years ago, I had a chance to actually see the good Professor Doctor in his element, and it was so obvious that he loves what he does. As he was showing me around, and explaining everything, he was truly like a kid in a candy store.  I caught the excitement.

One of my favorite bits was looking at foreign paper currency under UV light.  Each nation weaves a different mineral that makes it glow in a specific way under UV light to help combat forgers*.  I had a Turkish 20 lira bill that I swapped him for a €5, so he could have it for his collection.  I showed my girls this when I got home, and they got excited.

We are all very proud of Andries, and send Congratulations again to him and his supportive family.

*Except for US currency; if it glows under UV, then you know it’s a forgery.  When I got home, I pulled out several US bills to show off my newfound knowledge...and a $1 bill glowed.  I yelled to CrowMan I had a forged $1, and he (who was in the business of knowing) yelled back saying it was unlikely—it isn’t cost-effective to forge such a small denomination.  :o. I told him to come see.  So he did.  And conceded that on this occasion, I was correct. ;D
