Goodbye, Neil Peart
« on: January 10, 2020, 05:12:18 pm »
Neil Peart, one of the best drummers in the world and an inspiration to generations of aspiring drummers, has died of brain cancer at the age of 67. I watched him play in Dallas during Rush's final tour in 2015. Farewell...

When I heard that you were gone, I felt a shadow cross my heart.

I’m going home to put my Time Machine tour shirt on.  It was the only tour I was lucky enough to see.  CrowSon went to the farewell tour for his birthday, we got him tickets. Once I actually listened to the music for myself (Grace Under Pressure), my life was never the same again.

He lost a daughter about 20 years ago; I imagine his reunion with her was a joyous one.

RIP.

He was not only one of the greatest drummers of all time, but one of the greatest lyricists. Rush was a very important part of my college years. I am so sad about his loss.

The minute I heard the news, my thoughts went to Mirkwood.  Mirk, if you're reading this, I send you my heartfelt condolences.  Now I'm going to listen to some Rush.

I would like to add that CrowBaby is participating in a History Fair; the theme is Groundbreaking Events.  She chose the Manhattan Project, after listening to that Rush song, and reading the poetry that Neil wrote for lyrics.  I told her about an interview I heard, where he discussed writing this song.  I agreed with her that he distilled it perfectly.

Our city library had a mini comic book convention-of-sorts yesterday.  CrowBaby and I went.  I wore my Time Machine Tour shirt...and upon entering, was immediately surrounded by several Star Wars cosplayers that are part of a group in a city not too far away.  Stormtroopers signaled their approval, and a female Jedi—who apparently is/was a Peart family friend—had to talk to me (who’d’ve thought, in my hick city).  When I asked for a picture, she insisted I join in the posing.

She said there is a big crossover between StarWars and Rush fans.  I hadn’t thought of it before, but it made sense.

I took my youngest son to lunch yesterday. I was wearing my R40 tour T-shirt. As soon as I entered the restaurant, a random guy came up to me and started a conversation about how Neil's lyrics had really connected with him when he was a teenager. I was smiling the whole time.

Rush has been a significant part of my life for 40 years.  It was a sad day when the news arrived.  I saw the first post on it just a few minutes after the news broke.  I was at work, so I could not put on my Time Machine shirt until that night and I wore my Snakes and Arrows shirt the next day.

I was able to see Rush 7 times.  Many of the misses were due to ticket prices (the cheapest farewell seats were $100).  I was also able to take my sons to see them.  One saw two shows and the other saw one.

Rush's music will always be with us.

The U.S. Army band performed a string arrangement of "Time Stand Still" to honor Neil Peart. The video is embedded in the story.

That is wonderful.  Even my sibling that wasn’t a fan thought it was great.  Thank you, again.
