Home Improvement
« on: December 11, 2019, 08:47:17 pm »
I hate knife blocks. They don't have the slots you need, and they're designed for collections of matching knives. Plus, they take up counter space. Drawers are worse. Even with organizers, knives still get dinged up. So, here's my solution. I turned our narrowest kitchen drawer into a knife drawer. In the first pic, I have only glued cork in the bottom. Then, I put cork on all the sides and added a handle rest. Finally, I put in my most-used knives: A serrated bread knife, a honing steel, a paring knife, a chef's knife, and a Santoku, along with removable cork dividers. The whole project cost under $10 and took about an hour. I'm rather pleased.  8)

How deep is this drawer?

I have two that look to be as narrow as yours, they are 11.5 inches deep.

Iggy, I'll measure it when I get home tonight.

Thanks Roper. My two are much deeper than yours, So perhaps putting my knives in vertically would work better.

Roper, what do you think about the magnetic strips on the wall?  I have two of those and I really like them.

I really like magnetic knife strips. That would have been my choice. In my kitchen, all of my walls are covered with cabinets, so I don't have a convenient place for magnetic strips unless I remove a cabinet. Which I will probably do in the future.

I put my two magnetic strips under the cabinet as I had no wall space either. Plus I have two knife holders as well, but they are so inconvenient to use.

I utilized the sides of cabinets and the fronts of things like pantry doors a LOT.

I utilized the sides of cabinets and the fronts of things like pantry doors a LOT.

Yep, me too. This *kitchen* [and I use this word lightly] of mine is the most hacked up room in the house. To the left of the stove is a narrow wall where the original owner put a 'spice' wall. Had this kitchen been a decent cooking kitchen rather than a heat up frozen horderve kitchen, than a floor to ceiling spice wall would be extremely useful. I removed all of the 2.25" wide shelves, lined it with peg board painted deep red and now hang all of my skillets, pots, pans and a few wire whisks.

I removed the drop in range top/cupboard with a working full size free standing oven/range and above that I covered the exposed icky wall with peg board painted deep red and hung all of my cooking utensils that have holes in the handles.

On the thin strip of wall between the cupboard and the pan wall I have hung all of my pot holders because there are next to no drawers in the kitchen.

In the wall hole where the tiny oven was, the upper half now holds my microwave and below that all of my glass oven ware. What is really odd is when the oven was removed, the hole was much larger than need be. So my handyman removed the finished front and put in a shelf making two compartments.

On the side of the cupboard at the dining room entrance I have yet another peg board painted deep blue where all of my sieves hang. Above that on the upper cupboard hang all of my plastic cutting sheets. Then above the door way to the laundry room hang all of my small colorful colanders. Under the cupboard to the right of where my magnetic strips [2] I have a small long dowel with S hooks where all of my colorful measuring cups hang. Three sets of them.
