New Temple Recommend Questions
« on: October 14, 2019, 07:20:18 am »
Here is a comparison of the previous questions and the new questions. I don't agree with all of Proctor's editorial comments. I do really like the changes.

I agree with you Roper. Questions are better, but I disagree with the author that Q7 is necessarily more clear.

Agree with Roper. I have a number of friends who have left the church and occasionally get vocal about Church leadership or policy or doctrinal 'flaws.'  I don't partake in those conversations, I don't agree with their findings, but I still love them. Loving them is the only thing I can do for them that has any hope of guiding them home.

I also think Q7 is clearer and less… well, troubling for many people. The word “affiliate” in its strictest sense means to officially align oneself with something or someone. I would interpret that to include Church members joining a “fundamentalist LDS” group, or one that actively promotes same-sex marriage, etc. If we look at broader word definitions, that could be an issue for Saints with family or friends in fundamentalist, pro-SSM, or other groups that teach contrary beliefs. If I associate with a relative who has a SS partner, am I “affiliating”? Now, I don’t need to worry about this; it’s OK to be in touch with them without jeopardizing my temple status.

The new Q9 must be a relief to many people. I’m one of those who would have to answer that to the best of my ability, I am honest & believe I’m doing my best to always be. But I would have to qualify my reply because I know that like all humans, I’m imperfect and there may be times I’m not totally honest, usually inadvertently but occasionally for devious reasons (for most of us, the usual one is to cover our YKW). I know that I then need to repent, quit that behavior, & commit to improving, which is what God’s grace & Christ’s atonement are about. So I do like that new Q9 because it allows for human frailties.

For Q5 about the law of chastity, the new reference to striving for moral cleanliness in thoughts & behavior adds clarity & emphasizes that the law (& really, any of God’s laws) is not just a checklist that I am doing or not doing a specific thing. If I have a porn habit, or do things that are a misuse of God’s procreative gift even though I am not “Doing It,” I’m not following the spirit of the law. In the same vein, if I’m not stealing but I spend my days plotting dishonest acts, I am not really striving to be honest in all that I do.

Overall, I think the Q’s as a whole put more personal responsibility on us & on our use of agency, while acknowledging that we're human. This is in line with other changes we are seeing, which the Lord intends to make us even better prepared for the Second Coming by requiring us to learn & follow the higher law.
