New Calling
« on: June 03, 2019, 12:03:42 am »
After two years as Sunday School President I was released.

Now I am...wait for it...the Self Reliance Specialist, tasked with updating the ward emergency plan (the one I wrote ten years ago) and teaching food storage.  I guess ten years in the calling was not long enough!  I'm back!

Congrats on your new calling. Obviously Father needs your expertise in your ward/stake. Wish you were in my branch!

Congratulations, Mirkwood. You'll do an excellent job in that calling. Again.  8)

I have served as ward clerk three times. I hope I never get that calling again. This is my third time serving as Primary music leader. I'd be overjoyed to have that calling as many times as the Lord calls me.

Man, I'd love to be the primary music leader.  I'm the SS pres right now.  On one hand, it is nice with only needing to be on standby ever other week.  On the other hand, I'm struggling with figuring out how to help families to do the home study side of things. My instructors are indicating about 50% of the families are doing it.

Mirk, any ideas as you leave your post?

Heh.  Exact opposite here.  I've clerked or secretaried for five bishops, just started on my sixth a month or two ago.  If they ever try to release me, I'll just lock myself in the clerk's office.  And they won't be able to do anything about it, because I'll hide all the keys.
What-about-ism is pointless. I like to think most people's responses to such arguments would be, "Yup. That person, who happened to wear the same political jersey I do/did, was totally wrong on that, too."

My last teacher council was on that topic.  We all discussed what was and was not working, what we were doing etc.

Not that you need advice, but I just saw this and thought it a great idea:https://www.facebook.com/TotallyReady/photos/a.422581157758001/2859912184024874/?type=3&theater

Along with having true shoes next to your bed in case you needed to evacuate in the middle of the night. An earthquake or tornado may leave you in a mess of broken windows and mirrors.

I keep a pair of slip on shoes under the bed for just such a purpose.

We really struggle with it.  Family dynamics plays a lot into that.  The way it is set up is not intuitive to me and so trying to lead our family in it when one of our members has a unique thinking process  on top of that just makes it downright difficult sometimes.  It SEEMS like it should be simple. I don't know why it is not for us.

We are committed to working on it so if other families are having some of our same struggles, but don't feel as strongly about it then I can see them just not doing it.

Perhaps you can find families that are doing well with it and do a Sunday school session where they do it just as they would with their family to show an example?  It won't work for everyone, but maybe you could pick up some.
Time for a change.  I am yungmom, but have wanted a new username for some time.

The bishop called and wants to meet with my wife and me Sunday 20 minutes before church. We moved into the ward last August and have been the Sunday School teachers for the 11 and 12 year olds. We are speculating that it could be another joint calling, or one of us could get one of the big callings where your spouse needs to sign off on it. I am trying to get called into work tomorrow, but we will see how that goes.

As to the participation rate in the Come, Follow Me program:
One of the hardest things about the Plan of Happiness is that it requires agency.  Which means it requires allowing people the freedom to fail.  It is REALLY tempting to set up systems to fill in all the gaps and make it nearly impossible for people, especially people we love, to fail.  But, just as our Exemplar showed us in allowing his children to come here even knowing most of them would fail, the importance of CHOOSING our paths and whether to accept the Atonement and the plan of salvation that means eternal growth, is more vital to our chance at Immortality and Eternal Life than having our choices taken away, even if it means allowing us to fail or even stray.
The cool thing is, though, that if we REALLY try, including REALLY repenting, we are guaranteed eternal success even if we fail by worldly standards.
