Life changes
« on: May 17, 2017, 05:46:34 pm »
I never thought I would leave Texas.  I love just about everything here.  However...

My parents are in Utah.  They're getting to that point in age/health that I want to be closer to them so that our kids have a relationship with their grandparents and so that we can be closer to help.  Michelle's folks are also in Utah, and we have the same thoughts about them.  And, we have a lot of extended family in Utah.

So we're moving.  I just accepted a job teaching in Payson, UT beginning in August.  We'll be moving this summer.  I honestly didn't think I'd ever want to live in Utah, especially not anywhere between Provo and Ogden.  :P  The more I learn about Payson and the surrounding area, the more I'm starting to like it.  8)

My daughter, Abigale, is super excited because it means she can get a dog  ;D

It will definitely be an adventure!

I hope it all goes well for you and you like it as well as we do.  Zeta-flux and I were hesitant to return to Utah after graduate school.  We'd enjoyed living outside of the area and some of the culture.  We live in Orem and we love it.  Our ward is amazing and we really like the schools.

We really like Utah County. The only issue I have with Utah is that it is so HOT.

Maybe too soon, but my husband and I are going to Utah to visit his family.I'd love to have dinner with the Roper clan.  We'll be there June 13-19. Give a shout if we can make it happen!

I'd love to meet y'all, too.  But, we won't be up there until June 22nd (son's wedding) then we'll probably be moving up end of July / beginning of August.

Utah's weather is pretty mild.   Hot and dry in the summer, but not as hot and dry as Nevada or Arizona.  Rainy in the spring, but not as rainy as the west coast.  Cold and snowy in the winter, but not as cold and snowy as the midwest.  Stormy in the autumn, but not as stormy as the south.

Climate wise, my biggest complaints would be the extremely dry air in the winter (although that does result in awesome snow), and the smog trapped by inversions.

It will be nice to get back to a place with four distinct seasons.  And no tornadoes. I'm hoping the smog won't be so bad down around Payson.  Last time I was up there, it seemed like it was okay once you got south of the point of the mountain. If things were perfect, I'd live in Richfield.  But there aren't any jobs there unless you're a truck driver, a nurse, or a fry cook.

It seems to me that someone else from Old Nauvoo moved to Payson. I want to say Beau (?) but I think he's still in California.

I never thought I would move to Utah, either but here we are.  I miss Texas thunderstorms (not the hail and mostly not the tornadoes) very much.  Outside of little things here and there, I haven't missed much else.  I do feel I left some roots back there, part of my family being in Oklahoma and Texas since the late 19th century.

I like places like Beaver, Fillmore, Richfield, Manti and etc but employment opportunities haven't made those areas possible.  My wife is getting too used to the warmer weather down here in St. George but it is still a little too hot for me (and definitely hotter than Utah county).

I imagine you'll be teaching still in Payson?  Too bad we couldn't get you down here.  We have some little ones in elementary school I would love to have you for a teacher.
Still TheOne and only me who happens to now be curlybat.

The weather is different....whole lot more snow.   Get snow chains now during the off season!

Your take home pay will be less due to personal income taxes too.

And then there are all those MORMONs to deal with :o  (hope you like green jello  :P)

Seriously, good luck with the change of scenery.

My folks live in St. George, so I applied for a couple of positions in Washington county. I had a phone interview for a school in Hurricane. I didn't hear from them for a long time. I finally received an email from them after I had accepted the position in Payson.

I think it will all balance out.  TX has no state income tax, but property tax is really high.  Our property taxes are over $200 / month, and we live in 1650 sq.ft. home. And sales tax is high.

I grew up in eastern Idaho.  I could see the Tetons from my front yard.  I've missed the mountains for all these years.
