Predictions for the coming General Conference?
« on: March 29, 2017, 01:21:22 am »
We already know the Oakland & Washington temples are closing for a year or more for major renovation. So … what new temples be announced? Maybe the first ones in the Middle East & China (other than Hong Kong – which was dedicated before Hong Kong became part of the PRC), a result of sensitive negotiations between the Church & the governments in those areas that couldn’t be made public.

The White House, Capitol, & Supreme Court will be dedicated for missionary work. The dedication will be done by Elder Oaks, a former Utah Supreme Court justice.

The Apostles & all the general auxiliary presidencies will sing as a choir.

What non-English languages will be used by speakers this time?

We'll still hear the shout of 'opposed', and we'll still hear those folks referred to their stake presidents.

I'm hoping, not expecting but hoping, for some more council on how to best love and serve folks in the US illegally.  I don't expect and don't really hope to hear anything about the use of our buildings as sanctuaries, but wow wouldn't that be cool to hear.

With March/April 2018 General Conference coming soon, it’s time for the speculation & surmising & rumors to begin. What can we look forward to?

Who will be called to the vacancies in the Quorum of the Twelve? Will there be another one from outside the U.S., maybe even from the Third World? Or someone who isn’t married, or if married doesn’t have 18 grandkids & at least a few great-grandkids?

Will there be another set of talks by General Authorities/Officers in their own languages? I really liked that feature when it was done a couple of years ago. It helped me appreciate the effort it takes for non-English speakers to hear or read a translation & try to grasp it with the spirit & intent of the original speaker.

Last time I predicted that the White House, Congress, & the Supreme Court would be dedicated for missionary work, but it didn't happen. And see how much better off our country is now (not). Maybe it will be announced this time, & since the former Utah Supreme Court justice is now on the First Presidency, I'll again predict that he will be the one to pronounce the dedication.

Will no one, not even one person, actually use the word “supernal”? GC is literally the only time I ever hear that word used, almost every time in fact, & I would miss it if it didn't appear at least once.  :)

"Heavenly" means essentially the same thing, and is much more in common usage and can be translated easily to other languages.

But someone ALWAYS says "supernal." It wouldn't be General Conference without it. :)

Apparently, "supernal" was in vogue in early American literature.  Melville, Poe, Thoreau, and Twain all used the word.  So did John Milton, in "Paradise Lost."

Speaking of early American literature, wouldn't General Conference be much different if we had, say, a Jonathan Edwards-like apostle speaking?

"When you don't exactly comply with every word in 'For the Strength of Youth,' the God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked. ... Yea, there is nothing else that is to be given as a reason why you do not this very moment drop down into hell. O sinner! consider the fearful danger you are in!"  ;)

Ahhh, the beloved classic Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. I remember reading that in American Lit class. I wonder if Reverend Edwards used the word "supernal," or if he didn't waste any mention of heaven on his clearly wicked, hopelessly doomed listeners.  :D

There will be a call to action for helping refugees, including a program wherein members open up their homes to help tens of thousands relocate, helping the refugees learn English, obtain employment, and NOT trying to convert them. They will change religions on their own if they so desire. For those that do not have large enough homes, there will be a new perpetual immigration fund.

What about the about half of the membership not living in English speaking countries? Do we need to teach them also English or will the language spoken in the country be enough?

( :P)

Following President Kimball's challenge to members present at a meeting, President Nelson will encourage us all to become fluent in a new language.  http://mormanity.blogspot.com/2017/10/learning-from-president-nelsons.html

I've been reading Elder Bednar's book, Increase in Learning, and laughed when I saw it there.

That's. SORT of happening now. I work with GatheringHumanity.org .  We get donations of furniture, dishes, personal hygiene etc supplies from the community and then set up apartments for them to live in. Hopefully soon we will have a place where they can come for ESL classes and classes that will help them deal with trauma like yoga. The church has visited the warehouse and has encouraged Gathering Humanity to keep doing what it is doing.

President Nelson and Elder Uchtdorf will give a joint talk which starts with a miraculous story of a heart transplant and the airplane that transported the heart.
