Embroidery
« on: January 20, 2017, 03:25:25 am »
My mom likes to make up words.  A few years back one of the things she started doing was adding 'noodles' to things.  If someone was being bad, they were a goofer noodle.  If something was bad, she said 'stinker noodles,' etc.  So for Christmas last month, I found a free little program that makes cross stitch patterns from images, and then made an image with a swirly font I liked and made the pattern.  Stitched it up on linen and made a fancy little pillow (which I forgot to take a pic of) with purple velvet fabric on the back.  I'm rather proud of myself. :)

I read a bio of Dame Judi Dench a while ago.  An actress she worked with said she used to spend her time between takes making beautiful cross-stitch/needlepoint samplers.  Only upon closer inspection did one notice the flowery script was attached to some pretty insulting profanities.  Your project reminded me of that story and brought the same smile.

Here it is: http://cstitch.sourceforge.net/, but be warned, it's very fiddly and very poorly documented, and I said naughty words a few times while working with it.  But it's free, so you get what you pay for.

CG: I actually got the idea from some cross stitch patterns on Etsy that pretty much did that very thing.  I even spent at least 30 minutes finding the font they used because it was so perfect for the project. :)  (It's Flemish Script BT Regular, in case yanyone is interested. :) Not native to Windows; I had to download it.)

I have found that I often am interested in finding a font from small samples of it (I didn't used to be all weird about fonts.  It developed with the writing thing, I think), so the site http://www.identifont.com/index.html has come in incredibly handy.  You take your small sample and answer questions about the font and it offers suggestions until you can find it.  You can also upload an image, but I find that to be far less reliable.

I’m resurrecting this thread because I found another free site that will take a .jpg and chart a cross-stitch/knit/crochet pattern for you.  I used it for the Jaguar Afghan I knitted for CrowBaby’s school.  For a month’s subscription of €3, they will turn the chart into written directions (which I prefer).

I believe this website was created by lovely people in The Netherlands.

CG: I used something like that to make the cross-stitch I have up in the OP. :)

I remember.  You said it was fiddly, so I thought I would offer another option for those of us that can’t do fiddly.
