A Missionary By Himself...
« on: April 19, 2016, 12:53:10 am »
When we were in Bordeaux, France, on one of the trams, we saw an elder by himself, no companion. I looked around for his companion, nope. When he got off, he was by himself. He was busy talking to someone, or I would have introduced myself to him.

Is the whole they go in pairs thing not as strictly adhered to as I thought? Disclaimer: I have not served a mission, so this is really not my area of expertise.

From what I have heard, it is still a HUGE no-no, but I have also heard of missionaries occasionally sneaking off to be naughty.  Hopefully that wasn't the case.

I have no idea. I was thinking the same thing. But then, where's his companion? It wasn't like it was the middle of the night or anything - it was something like 10am.

weird.  Maybe it was someone pretending to be a missionary?  A wannabe or a recently returned one?  weird.

Maybe he was brand-new to the area, and was going to meet a companion?  (Shades of "The Best Two Years")

As far as I know they still transfer here in Finland by themselves as they have always - hop in a train or a bus in one city and meet the companion somewhere in the new city. I'd imagine that would be what this case is about even though I don't know the specific rules of that country.

I donīt know if any of your possibilities are realities, but I like them way better than what was in my head, so thanks. 😀

I would think that if this young man were "up to no good", he would hardly dress in something as recognizable as his missionary clothing.  If he's a real missionary, he does have P-day clothing which would be way less noticeable.

It is quite common around the world (not so much in the US where most transfers are by car) for missionaries to do transfers by themselves.  There are many places where public transport is the only thing available and where missionaries are spread out from each other such that it would be impossible logistics to be with a companion all the time.

Chicago is a railway hub, so when I served in Illinois, I would go alone on the train for transfers.  It was a long trip from Mattoon, Illinois to Keokuk, Iowa to go through Chicago.  That was a long time ago, though, I don't know if Mattoon and Keokuk are even still in the same mission, and if they are, their headquarters aren't anywhere near Chicago.

I'm in the Chicago West mission boundaries, and I've never heard of either of those towns LOL.

BUMP

Those towns are closer to me. Our ward mission leader looks for volunteers to drive the missionaries on transfer days around here.

In the farther parts of Germany we would take the train ourselves to the new town. Our new companions would meet us at the train stations. It was a nice bit of quiet for a couple of hours, though many of our apartments held two companionships (more economical).

For the goldens (new missionaries), the trainers would come into Berlin and pick up the golden missionaries at the training meeting, then take them to their new areas. I remember picking up my golden, and we had a long train ride to the most northern point of the mission. I think there would have been too many golden missionaries ending up in the wrong cities if they were sent out on their own.

We have a missionary here who covers all of AZ, lives at home and does service for refugee organizations etc. The day I met him he kept coming down the stairs and I wondeted where his companion was and why he stayed upatairs. Found out he doesn't have a companion. His mom came to pick him up later. It was great to see how a mission could be made to fit him.

Patty, I know the Church is piloting a special type of service mission that allows other callings, going to school, even dating.  Arizona is one of the 7 pilot missions.
