I'm not a writer, but I would like to be.
« on: March 16, 2016, 11:00:56 am »
I have lots of ideas for a book, but quite apart from not having the time to write, I could not with the detail, expression and description required.

I may just have a non-fiction book in me - time will tell.

I like the integration of the new forum section, Andrew.  Thank you.

I, too would love to be a writer.  I have the ideas, but have hard time expressing them in a cohesive manner.

Iíd like to be a writer too, like so many people here. Iíve been told I might have a bit of writing ability. But I know I lack the discipline to be a professional writer.  ::) So Iíll have to be content with messing around on forums.

I've been a writer on and off over the years. I'd like to get back into it if my brain will cooperate. Chronic illness sucks.

I have no problem expressing myself verbally. And I think I could, given the time and dedication, write a Church non-fiction book (I have a couple of ideas). A novel, or even novella, would not work for me because I would not be able to add the levels (description, side thoughts of characters, etc.) to make it an interesting enough read.

Building characters with traits, and interests, and ensuring those come out in the writing. I know what I would write, I have a story, just no way to flesh it out to a point where anyone would enjoy reading it, even if they enjoyed the main plot idea.

Still, time not writing is time spent reading  :)

My problem is turning the lump of raw ideas into something meaningful.  It's like a potter staring at a lump of clay on a wheel with no idea how to shape it into what he wants.

There was a time when I was overwhelmed with the infinite possibilities.

For me, the cure for that was to start writing.  And keep writing.

It's not perfect the first run-through.  And maybe not even very good.  But it's something.

You can't edit a blank page.  That is not original with me, but it's very true.

I guess I was the one that made the initial suggestion that got the writer's workshop going.  And I was the second-to-the last faithful contributor to that forum, but eventually I abandoned it as well.  Because I found a powerful new resource in a local writer's critique group.  Every session there has caused me to have a great leap forward.

But combining the writer's workshop with the Nauvoo forum might encourage me to come back a bit.

I understand the expectation that if I submit something expecting a critique, that I should provide the same service to others (although I don't think I'll be very good at it.)  Here's my question:  How much do I submit at one time?  For example, if I want feedback on a paper I'm submitting, I don't think it would be a good idea to post 20 pages at once.  What's a reasonable amount?

If it's divided into chapters or discrete sections, you could try one of those at a time.

I am trying to screw up my courage to post something I have worked on for a bit, that I know needs work, but nobody can give me specifics on what should be done.  I was thinking of submitting that in "chapters".

I'm usually far better at critiquing things that are submitted in chapters (I tend to get overwhelmed/anxious when facing an entire work).

That being said, I have only TWO CHAPTERS LEFT of my current manuscript!  Can I just express what a huge deal this is?  I've never completed writing a whole story IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.  I'm unbelievably excited.

At any rate, I really need to take a writing break once I've finished, because my carpal tunnel has become crazy bad lately.  So I'd be happy to submit mine for critiquing (in chapters or all at once; I don't care) and read some other submissions.

I have added a "Writing Critique" section. Post in there with a file attachment of your work. Ask what you want to receive feed back on, and if you want it by private message or in the thread.

I'd recommend for anyone needing some help with the technical aspects of putting a novel together to check out Book In A Month by Victoria Schmidt even if you don't plan on writing a book in a month. It's super helpful with organization.

Personally I think writing is just a matter of putting butt to chair and fingers to keyboard. It takes practice but you can do it :)
