I kind of understand the policy because of the way people react. I do understand people reacting if an apostle seems to go against a policy. But I kind of feel sad that there needs to be such a policy when in other regards the leaders ask us to be active in our communities and even politics in our pursue of making the world a better place.

It looks like the policy only came into place around the time Romney was running. I think they wanted to avoid the optics of Church leaders potentially financing the Mormon candidate. And, you know, I see why they would have done that.

Foreign nationals cannot contribute to US federal campaigns.   I presume it was grandkids or great grandkids (his wife would likely have known better)  and they might have been born in the US and be citizens.  And it has been a long time and they might have become citizens.   But if it was family who aren't that is a bigger problem with election law.

Uchtdorf naturalized in 2008. He is a dual citizen.
