Would you rather live a middle class life today in the USA, UK, Germany, Japan, France, Taiwan or any other advanced economy,

or would you rather live in the City of Enoch or with the Nephites in the 100 years after Christ's coming?

That's a hard question to answer. Here we are, with our modern quality of life, looking back on a time for which we have a very limited understanding. Imagine the question given to a person in that time: "Would you rather live in this Zion society, being of one mind and heart, with no poor among us, or would you rather live in a future society with all of these seemingly magical conveniences?" I expect the exercise would be equally unimaginable.

That said, I'll give it a shot: I would choose a Zion society in any age of civilization. My reasoning is informed by Alma 34:32: "For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors." I believe building and living in a Zion society is better preparation than all of the trappings of our modern society.

Of course, the follow-on consideration is, "Why not both?"

I wonder if it is in fact an either or?  Are middle class life and City of Enoch mutually exclusive?  I see my personal abundance as a call to be a better steward of the resources at my disposal.  Of course, I have the learning experience of poverty, and single parenthood, and abuse, neglect, and rejection in my backpack.   Material progress on the planet need not be a hindrance to spiritual progress. Church programs seem to support this.   Where City of Enoch was a place in time,  it was their mental attitude, and spiritual maturity that made it a celestial population.

I think.

You can be a Zion person and family as a middle class family. We can even belong to a great church. We can get into heaven. But my "would you rather" comparison is about a societal level of Zion. The City of Enoch was societal level, but didn't have indoor plumbing.
