President Bingham's Seminary Teachers
« on: February 25, 2021, 04:09:43 pm »
Did anyone notice in the Church News a few weeks ago how General RS President Jean Bingham tattled on one of her Seminary teachers? She spoke at a training broadcast for Seminary & Institute teachers, & her theme was what she wished she had known when she herself taught. She mentioned a Sister Thomander who had a strong testimony & understanding of the gospel. Sister Bingham didn’t remember games, snacks, or parties, but this teacher fed the class “spiritual meat” that challenged & uplifted the students every day. Then she described, in contrast, another teacher who had “a very casual approach. We learned not to ask doctrinal questions because his answers were often perfunctory or vague, and we weren’t sure he would or could answer them. Seminary served an important social purpose but was not a spiritual experience.”

Ouuuuch. 😣 If that second teacher is still living, I wonder what he thought (or would have thought) if he heard that. At least she didn’t name him. I guess it’s true what we’re so often told, that the youth callings are among the most vital in the Church & the lessons learned by either precept or example will be remembered & carried on for years.

What anyone gets out of a lesson/course is obviously first and foremost what they are willing to do to get it. But a large impact of that is in the teaching for learning style of the teacher.

My youngest child (a daughter) will graduate from Seminary this Summer - the last of all of us, nine in total including my wife and I. She is doing the online version which has one taught lesson a week - currently via Zoom.

The teacher is a convert, of quite some years.

He has, for some reason I do not understand, taught the Plan of Salvation on at least two occasions, and maybe more. This week's lesson, Wednesday morning, had just ended when I came down to leave for work. My daughter expressed, once again, how little she enjoys the lessons. He had just re-taught the Plan of Salvation. She said, "He always calls Spirit Prison Hell or Outer Darkness." This is not Doctrinally sound teaching. But he is doing his best.

And in a church of volunteers all we can hope for that we do our best.

She is off to university in September, to a university in our previous ward and stake. I know the Institute teachers and I am confident that her continued church education will be fine.
Don't ask me, I only live here.

Someone once told me that the scriptures are full of bad examples so that no one ever has to use a living one.

IME, seminary students do NOT all have the highest regard for the same teacher or way they do things.   People really do respond individually.   So the other seminary teacher need not take offense (not to mention that she likely had 4 different seminary teachers over four years.).
