Y'all want a bunch of new members?
« on: January 20, 2021, 09:55:21 pm »
I'm moderator of an LDS forum that's closing it's doors.  There's plenty of active members that will be crushed when the news is made public.

Any objections to me pointing them all here?  It would mean an immediate flush of LDS and friends, used to being on a forum that requires kindness and civility.  We didn't allow anti-LDS comments/links, and would often moderate rudeness.
What-about-ism is pointless. I like to think most people's responses to such arguments would be, "Yup. That person, who happened to wear the same political jersey I do/did, was totally wrong on that, too."

If it's the one I used to be a part of, I'd honestly be concerned about the tone changing here. A few of those over there are loud and unafraid to hurt feelings. That's why I left.

I welcome anyone who abides by our charter. What do other members think?

As long as they folliw the charter, especially the rule about keeping political discussions in the appropriate sections. and the understanding that differences of opinion on LDS topics does not make anyone apostate, I welcome enlarging the tent.

We think of Nauvoo as our cyber ward, which has become more important during the pandemic. For some folks here, it's more real now than their actual RW wards that are not providing the spiritual refuge that some people need.

If we're going to be a de facto quasi-ward, we have to 1) include people & not turn away anyone who wants to be part of our fellowship, & 2) be sure some standards of behavior are kept. The regulars here know that conversations can get heated or controversial, but we know to have them in the parking lot or side lawn & not in the chapel or Sunday school  room.

The Church doesn't reject people or kick them out for little sins & imperfections, but does insist we treat each other with respect & not have drunken brawls in the Cultural Hall. If another ward is dissolving & the people need a place to go & want to move into our ward, & they are agreeable to the standards, let's have them.

New perspectives, different attitude, learning experiences.
as long as everyone is kind, inclusive, charter thoughtful,
why not?

As long as they follow the charter, I'm completely fine with them (or anyone else) coming here.

I have no issue with them joining.

But I will have no problem ejecting any of them, should that be necessary. And we will not be have Ward Membership Councils.

They break the rules, they are warned, they break them again, they are gone.

We cannot disturb those for whom this has been a place of refuge (including myself) for the sake of having more members.

So, point away.
Don't ask me, I only live here.

I'm with Andrew. A big part of what keep those few of us here is the sense of community, understanding, and mutual respect that is held. Even those of us who strongly disagree on key topics tend to assume the best motivations of those they disagree with. And when someone feels insulted, there's often an ease in communicating that, and clearing up miscommunication, or swift apologies where important.

I'm concerned at the prospect of having another pre-established community (with their own expectations of what is acceptable community discourse and rhetoric) possibly numerically immediately overwhelming the core Nauvoo group, and with a possible assumption that it's a full-fledged merging of two boards, rather than an invitation to come into one with pre-existing guidelines they will be held to respect.

But as Andrew said, as long as they are willing to agree to work to adjust to the standards where necessary, I have no problem with welcoming them. Also, like Andrew, I have no problem with having them ejected if they're unwilling to be civil by our charter's standards.

I hope they are referred here, but I hope the announcement also says that we don't do yelling or demeaning or not listening to different people.  That we expect church members to behalf with kindness and graciousness and avoid contention.  And we do politics only in a very limited way in a restricted space, and people who act out aren't allowed to stick around long.

What is the forum? To me sounds like they can be welcome as an option but they probably want to have their own new forum just like we have.

Since I have thanked just about every comment made here, it can be safely assumed that I agree with the comments that have been made. :)

Also agreeing with the above comments. Fresh faces would be nice as long as they're willing to abide by the existing guidelines.
