MOVED: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has passed
« on: September 25, 2020, 03:40:46 pm »
This topic has been moved to Politics.

As this has become more and more common, I am going to STRONGLY encourage members to avoid posting political comments on existing threads. You know what you're about. Please don't make me personally reprimand you.

I think we will need to define what constitutes "political" comments, then. Besides one post about a letter and two about coffins/caskets, every post on that thread mentioned something political. So, what do we mean when comments have become political? Mentioning elected or appointed government officials? Analyzing positions or events related to politics? Advocacy for an issue from a political platform? Campaigning for (or against) a candidate? If we're going to encourage members to avoid posting political comments on everything outside the politics section, and and threaten a reprimand, then we need to be crystal clear in what we're expecting.

The 'threat' to personally reprimand was not directed at anyone, and I have never reached that point.

Basically, my rule is: if it is a subject involving political figures or policies AND there starts to be some contention, I move it. Especially when someone in the thread suggests that should happen. As I mentioned elsewhere, the Politics board isn't thread jail. It's merely helping those who want to avoid those types of discussions do so more easily. I know too many people who shut down and walk away when even the slightest hint of contention or disagreement starts to show up in a conversation. While I don't agree with that mindset, it doesn't hurt me to let those people have safe spaces and let the more challenging conversations happen elsewhere.

If my action is considered too heavy-handed, it can be undone. I am tired.
