September 14-20. 3 Nephi 8-11: "Arise and Come Forth unto Me."

Light and darkness.

The YW in my ward held a testimony meeting last Wednesday. Yesterday, in Ward Council, our YW President said, "As leaders, we were surprised at how much darkness our girls our experiencing. Several of them talked about how they are depressed and experiencing high levels of anxiety. It helped us realize that our focus needs to shift. We need to spend a lot more time building up our girls and helping them to understand they are not alone."

As my family began this week's study, we talked about light and darkness. It's interesting how each one of my children said they felt "light" when they were with their friends at church and at school. My wife, in her job, has had a dramatic increase in clients dealing with depression and addiction. I understand that isolation has been necessary to help protect physical health. Isolation has also created many mental health problems. There's definitely a dark side to mass isolation which I don't think we understand well.

Another thought about light.

Jesus taught, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. ... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matt 5:14,16.

The phrase "Virtue Signaling" is used a lot on social media in attempts to dismiss a person's ideas without actually considering the ideas.  It's a form of ad hominem attack. If we're going to claim to be disciples of Christ, shouldn't we be actively contributing things which are virtuous, lovely, of good report, and praiseworthy? Shouldn't we be letting our light shine?
