And there's "Some Good News" with John Krasinski.

Here are some cool stories. These folks couldn't have the exact weddings they'd planned due to social distancing, but were able to have pretty nice celebrations thanks to one church's priest & staff & one couple's neighbors.

Politics has gone to the dogs in this quirky California town. Yes, the mayor is a real dog, literally. This is the quaint artsy mountain town where CrowGirl took her mom, Jana, Libertygranny, & me when we all visited a few years ago.

https://nypost.com/2020/08/08/a-dog-has-been-mayor-of-this-california-town-for-8-years/

I was just recalling that Jana had planned to come to California this past Easter. That had been before disaster struck & shut down international travel.

* Waves to Jana over the pond. * 👋 Maybe one of these days we'll get another chance to visit, when the world is back to somewhat normal.

Is anyone ready for some super feel-good news before we go into the final quarter of a year that can't go away soon enough?

This is a rather complicated critter-napping story. Last week, a lemur was stolen from the San Francisco Zoo. It happened overnight & police found signs of forced entry. The zoo made an urgent appeal for tips because the lemur is aging & needs extra care.

A few days later the critter turned up. He was spotted in the next town in the playground of a church’s daycare by one of the kids, who exclaimed, “Look, there’s a lemur!” The daycare director wondered at first if the kid had seen a raccoon. But it was the lemur. They called Daly City police, who took the lemur into custody to wait for S.F. police & zoo staff. I don’t think anyone is clear yet on how the lemur got there.

The same day, police in Marin County, north of S.F. across the Golden Gate Bridge, stopped a truck that had been stolen from the sanitation district. The driver was a Los Angeles man. On his cell phone, the police found photos of... guess what? One of the officers had been to the zoo a day earlier & the lemur was fresh on his mind. So this L.A. dude, driving a stolen Marin County official vehicle, who had some interest in a lemur from San Francisco that ended up in Daly City, is now in jail charged with an assortment of crimes.

The lemur is back home, getting health care & TLC as he readjusts after his kidnapping ordeal. The zoo had offered a reward for his recovery & it will go to the church. And the 5-yo who noticed the lemur & alerted the adults will receive a lifetime zoo membership. Everyone lived happily ever after, except the alleged lemur-snatcher.

Wildfires are disastrous for wildlife as well as forests, people, & property. They usually get serious burns on their feet. so they can't get around & if they survive the fire, they may starve, die of thirst, or become prey. Fish & Game, veterinarians, zoos, & other concerned two-footers are trying to treat & rehabilitate injured animals.

https://abc7news.com/wildlife-disaster-network-wildfire-animal-rescue-california-fires-mountain-lion-burned/6984552/

This mountain lion cub was rescued from a wildfire near Redding. He was named Captain Cal because a Cal Fire firefighter found him, & the Oakland Zoo is treating him for severely burned paws. In this video, he is meeting two female cubs also orphaned by that fire. He still has his bandages on.

This adult bear did well in the hospital & has been released.

Some animals displaced by the fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains are showing up at people’s homes & volunteers are looking after them.

We’ve had some hanging out around the Cabin. We give them only tiny amounts of food so they can subsist but not become dependent, but we put out pans of water because it’s been so hot during the days & if they’re parched, they can’t go foraging or hunting.

Masked intruders break into a bank before it opens & a customer looks inside & sees one of them in plain sight.

Why is that feel-good news? Because they were captured after a short foot pursuit inside the bank, no one got hurt, nothing was missing, & they are pretty cute for a couple of brazen little felons.

Don't they look a bit like lemurs?

This is a story about a hole in the wall store in a San Francisco suburb that has been around 85 years. The present owner bought it in 1993 under less than happy conditions: the previous owner had been murdered in the store. The crime was never solved, despite a vague suspect description & attention from "America's Most Wanted."

But the story is really about the owner & his family, immigrants from Taiwan, & how they've become a beloved part of the mostly upper middle class White community. He & his wife took turns running the store so both could go to night school to study English, & they sent their kids to college. He runs tabs for customers & sells sandwiches for $4.75, & customers chip in money to help tide him over the pandemic. They & the neighbors all get along like neighbors.

God is mindful of even the sparrow's fall, so of course He would take an interest in one small chameleon who got stranded on a power line in a San Francisco suburb. This little critter clung to the power line for 3 days, then the resident called the Humane Society.

Watch the suspense: will the critter agree to be rescued?

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Exotic-pet-lizard-stranded-for-3-days-on-Daly-15706103.php

And of course He created raccoons too.  :) This cute little furball will grow up to pry open your garbage can or scratch & beat up your dog or cat to get its food.

One of America’s best-known icons was born when a badly injured bear cub was rescued in a forest fire in New Mexico. He became a symbol of fire prevention & went to live at the National Zoo in Washington, & people everywhere fell in love with Smokey Bear. Now California has a new fire rescue critter, but he was named for the existing fire prevention mascot, rather than inspiring a new one.

In late September as wildfires devoured millions of acres, many animals were killed, injured, or driven out of their habitats. Some lucked out & were rescued. Mammals often get burns on their feet that make it even harder to escape. One that got national attention was a mountain lion cub found near Redding by Cal Fire (the state forestry & fire protection dept.) He weighed 4 pounds & was dehydrated, with badly burned feet, whiskers gone, & severe eye irritation. He was named Captain Cal, after Cal Fire’s mascot who is Smokey’s equivalent, & given to Fish & Game which took him to the Oakland Zoo for treatment.

The zoo staff gave him skilled treatment to save him. He was orphaned only a few weeks old, too young to have learned life skills from his mother. So he could never survive in the wild. Meanwhile, two mountain lion sisters came to Oakland. They were not hurt but were also fire orphans. Once Cal was better, he was introduced to the girls, & they all instantly became the best of pals.

The Oakland Zoo has kept everyone posted on the cats’ progress. Offers came from zoos to take in the cubs, & Columbus, Ohio was chosen. So the three adopted siblings will soon go to their new home where they will stay together. And Columbus has a geriatric female mountain lion who the zoo people hope will make a good surrogate grandma for the youngsters.

A 5-inch tall owl was found in the Christmas tree taken to the Rockefeller Center in New York. It had traveled for 3 days without food, except maybe for whatever was infesting the tree. He got a health exam & a feast of mice, & will be taken back to the woods.
