Alma 27 and Ammon's reluctance to inquire of the Lord
« on: June 30, 2020, 11:00:15 pm »
One thing that happens in the beginning of Alma 27 is the Anti-Nephi-Lehies are in danger. The Lamanites are killing them, and Ammon decides that the whole group should promptly flee to the Nephite lands. When he proposes this to King Anti-Nephi-Lehi, the king shares concerns that Ammon's plan may be equally dangerous.

Ammon then proposes that he (as their High Priest) ask the Lord if they should do it. The King agrees to abide by the results of the revelation.

Then there is a brief discussion where the king learns that the Nephites don't have slavery, and Ammon does something weird. Even though slavery wasn't a concern that was keeping the king from being certain about the move in the first place, once Ammon addresses it, he asks the king if they can just skip the revelation and go ahead with the relocation. The king prefers to get the revelation, so Ammon prays, they get verse 12, which includes not only direction to go ahead with the relocation but prophesy that the Lord will protect them as they so do.

Why do you think Ammon was reluctant to take it directly to the Lord? It certainly seems like they got something good out it.

I think there was both a sense of urgency, and a sense of "stop bugging God for obvious decisions." We know both from the statement that one who must be commanded in all things is a slothful and unwise servant, and from admonitions to the Saints in Joseph Smith's time because they were bugging him (and God) with every tiny little thing and basically wasting their time. It's not that God doesn't care or doesn't have time to take care of these things. It's that part of the point is for us to also LEARN and that includes being able to think and make decisions for ourselves.
I have personally been reprimanded (through the Spirit) for being reticent and afraid to think and act for myself. Yes, God wants to be involved. But have you ever had a child who was afraid to make decisions for themselves? Have you seen the impotence of adults who have never learned this vital skill? The point of this life is learning and becoming. Being a puppet doesn't fulfill that purpose.
