The constitutional crisis is starting.

Quote
If another leader of another nation stood in another simmering capital and instructed police and law enforcement to “dominate the streets” against protesters, then walked through a park where government officers had forcibly cleared demonstrators from his path, then arrived outside a church to hold a Bible aloft like a championship trophy for the cameras — well, what would America think of that?

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/02/us/politics/trump-holds-bible-photo.html

Quote
A Department of Defense adviser has resigned, effective immediately, from the military's science board ... In his resignation letter ... James Miller Jr., who served as the US undersecretary of defense for policy from 2012 to 2014, recalled that he swore an oath of office to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States" and "to bear true faith and allegiance to the same," similar to what the defense secretary had done before he took office. "On Monday, June 1, 2020, I believe that you violated that oath," Miller wrote to Esper. Miller's reasoning centered on President Donald Trump's visit Monday to St. John's Church in Washington, DC, where police cleared peaceful protesters with tear gas so that he could pose with a Bible for photographs. "Unfortunately, it appears there may be few if any lines that President Trump is not willing to cross, so you will probably be faced with this terrible question again in the coming days," he added. "You may be asked to take, or to direct the men and women serving in the US military to take, actions that further undermine the Constitution and harm Americans."

History is replete with accounts of governments silencing and oppressing people in the name of religion. I hope we're not heading in that direction.

Two phrases came to mind with Trump's church photo and phone call with rhe governors.

False priests who oppress.
reign with blood and horror

Whose side are you on?

I'm on the Lord's side, as articulated by President Nelson yesterday:

Quote
We join with many throughout this nation and around the world who are deeply saddened at recent evidences of racism and a blatant disregard for human life. We abhor the reality that some would deny others respect and the most basic of freedoms because of the color of his or her skin.

We are also saddened when these assaults on human dignity lead to escalating violence and unrest.

The Creator of us all calls on each of us to abandon attitudes of prejudice against any group of God’s children. Any of us who has prejudice toward another race needs to repent!

During the Savior’s earthly mission, He constantly ministered to those who were excluded, marginalized, judged, overlooked, abused, and discounted. As His followers, can we do anything less? The answer is no! We believe in freedom, kindness, and fairness for all of God’s children!

Let us be clear. We are brothers and sisters, each of us the child of a loving Father in Heaven. His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, invites all to come unto Him—“black and white, bond and free, male and female,” (2 Nephi 26:33). It behooves each of us to do whatever we can in our spheres of influence to preserve the dignity and respect every son and daughter of God deserves.

Any nation can only be as great as its people. That requires citizens to cultivate a moral compass that helps them distinguish between right and wrong.

Illegal acts such as looting, defacing, or destroying public or private property cannot be tolerated. Never has one wrong been corrected by a second wrong. Evil has never been resolved by more evil.

We need to foster our faith in the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man.

We need to foster a fundamental respect for the human dignity of every human soul, regardless of their color, creed, or cause.

And we need to work tirelessly to build bridges of understanding rather than creating walls of segregation.

I plead with us to work together for peace, for mutual respect, and for an outpouring of love for all of God’s children.
All grown-ups were once children...but only few of them remember it. ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "The Little Prince."

The constitutional crisis is starting.

It's been going on for awhile. It has just gradually become less & less subtle.

I was going to stay off this thread for awhile because I’ve been so disturbed by recent events, how rudderless our country seems, & some of the noise coming from you-know-where, but I simply had to post this & call out the blatant, deplorable, complete lack of any kind of sensitivity & empathy.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-hails-jobs-numbers-and-equality-says-its-a-great-day-for-floyd/ar-BB155qn5?ocid=spartanntp

Quote
President Trump declared victory Friday over improving unemployment numbers and the civil unrest that has swept the nation over the death of George Floyd

Yes, there was a big employment gain in May, a good thing (if it wasn't a statistical error or sleight of hand). I’m grateful on behalf of those who can start clawing their way back. But remember, 30 million Americans are still out of work &, the rate is still over 13%, more than 3x January's rate, & this didn’t have to be if the Covid response had not been so fubar to begin with & provoked such a massive economic “shutdown.” As always, he is eager to own all the credit for the gains but none of the responsibility for the pandemic mess. And don’t expect anyone to forget how many thousands of people died after competent federal response could have meant slower spread of the virus (IOW, those deaths are on Trump’s hands).

Quote
But black unemployment rose slightly from 16.7% in April to 16.8% in May, in a month the president declared a "tribute to equality" as the nation protests racial discrimination and police brutality.

Trump may not even know that. Never one for details, he probably saw 2.5 million, rejoiced at such a bigly number & the votes that might mean, shrugged & went on planning his next golf trip. The higher joblessness for black people, or for that matter the human plight of people in general, is not something his radar is set for. As many have said (not just me, so don’t anyone jump on me & call me a Trump-a-phobe), he isn’t big on empathy. Caring about people is not part of his make-up at all.

And what could better show his total cluelessness, indifference to people, lack of any filter (either in or out), & absence of compassion, sympathy, or ability to relate to real humans than this:

Quote
“Equal justice under the law must mean that every American receives equal treatment in every encounter with law enforcement, regardless of race, color, gender or creed, they have to receive fair treatment from law enforcement. They have to receive it. We all saw what happened last week. We can't let that happen. Hopefully, George is looking down right now and saying this is a great thing that's happening for our country. This is a great thing for him, it's a great day for everybody. This is a great day for everybody. This is a great, great day in terms of equality."

I am speechless. I can’t think of one single thing to say to this.

And I’m not going into his Bible-brandishing stunt at the Episcopal church or the visit to the Pope John Paul shrine, or the push-back from General Mattis, Secretary Esper, & even some GOP senators on his use of the military to suppress civil unrest the way tyrants do. There's been lots of media coverage, so anyone can make up their own mind if he pushed the bounds of law by meshing military & civil authority or the bounds of decency by having people gassed so he could pose at a church with a Bible.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/tensions-flare-between-trump-military-figures-over-handling-of-george-floyd-unrest/ar-BB151U5M?li=BBnba9I

I heard an interview with Jeff McCausland, a military affairs consultant, a retired colonel who has taught at the War College, Annapolis, & civilian colleges & was on the National Security Council. He is on CBS often & I’ve never heard him be so blunt. Asked about Mattis’ article, he called it “stunning” for a 4-star general to criticize a president for lack of leadership & competence (not over policy). He noted that General Allen & Admiral Mullen had done the same. McCausland called out Trump for using active military to “attack a peaceful crowd exercising its First Amendment rights so he could do a silly photo opp” & for “inconsistent if not pathetic response” to the pandemic. Wow. He said he took an oath to “defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign & domestic.” He didn’t accuse anyone of being such an enemy, so we can judge that for ourselves.

https://kcbsradio.radio.com/media/audio-channel/a-rift-is-brewing-between-the-pentagon-and-president-trump

P.S. We are around the anniversaries of the suppression of the Tiananmen Square revolt by one dictatorship, & of D-Day, when the free world began to liberate France & then Europe from another, perhaps the mother of all modern tyrannies. I hope & pray for wisdom in Congress, the cabinet, & the judiciary, & of course the voters, to be extra vigilant about protecting our constitutional form of government. “It can’t happen here” is something no American should be naïve enough to believe.

While he keeps downplaying the threat of COVID to the country, the Snowflake-in-Chief is apparently petrified at the idea of getting it & insists on the best of protection. Since he thinks it looks wussy for even the best-known wuss in America to wear a mask, & doesn’t want the media to catch him with one, why doesn’t he just slink down into the bunker like YKW in April 1945 & ignore the obvious that is going on all around him? Which is what he has largely been doing for months. What a hypocrite.

https://www.rawstory.com/2020/06/trump-demands-personal-protection-from-contracting-covid-19-as-he-downplays-pandemic-report/

In Tulsa, where he managed to fill all of 1/3 of the venue for his circus sideshow, ;D he filled the air with bombastic blustering to show off what a big bad tough dude he is. Now it turns out his campaign flunky’s pulled social-distancing labels from seats where they were put to protect attendees. Obviously, the well being of those poor peons doesn’t mean anything even though the Wimp-in-Chief is terrified of getting sick. I guess they needed to force people to cluster together – think how humiliating it would be to have cameras pan the audience in solid-red Tulsa & see that sad, skimpy turnout.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/elections-2020/workers-removed-thousands-of-social-distancing-stickers-before-trumps-tulsa-rally-according-to-video-and-a-person-familiar-with-the-set-up/ar-BB162K0T?ocid=spartanntp

States like Texas, Florida, & Arizona, with their sovereign citizens & freedom-loving patriotic Americans intent on making a statement about not being “tread on,” are NOW starting to “get it,” so even airheads like Abbott & DeSantis are acting serious & “suggesting” that masks might not be such a bad idea. And Pence is backing out of some campaign events in states that let the virus run wild.

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Pence-cancels-some-political-events-because-of-15371360.php

NOW they think about it. Where I live, most people have been covering up since late March, or even earlier, & we’re still seeing growing numbers of infections. But at least we’ve been TRYING. How much worse would Santa Clara or Alameda counties be, & how many more deaths than 49 would San Francisco have, if the Bay Area had acted like some other states? Those politicians, starting with the top place-holder that I am increasingly seeing referred to as “the president.” are going to be judged by history for negligence & complicity in the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans who probably should be alive today.

Trump reacted a lot faster & more emphatically to the prospect of statues of Confederate generals being pulled off their pedestals than to George Floyd's death or the threat to hundreds of thousands of lives from coronavirus. NUFF SED.  >:(

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-says-border-wall-has-stopped-everything-including-covid-19/ar-BB15SNHk

Another modest prediction: the progression of Covid virus will vindicate The Wall! I wish we had the "Wave" emoji from Old Nauvoo, because this is truly a reason to celebrate.

Trump is claiming that it stopped Covid from crossing the border. So, ummmm, I guess Mexico should be grateful. 8) It has only about 213,000 cases compared to 10+ times in the U.S., more than 2,600,000, & 26,000 deaths compared to our 128,000. And that is despite probably being one of Donald's "$***hole countries." This ought to persuade Mexico to pay for the stupid thing, & to bow down & thank the Supreme Leader for building it to keep our nasty first-world kooties out of their country & save thousands of their people from CoronaArizonavirus.

But wait – Canada has only 103,000 cases and 8,000 deaths, and we don’t have a border wall with Canada.

Can it simply be that our neighbors on both sides are just doing something right? Or just as importantly, not doing everything wrong, not being incompetent & indecisive, not treating this virus as just a little flu bug that is under control & hates hot weather & will go away any day? Or are they all taking regular doses of Lysol?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/we-need-to-live-with-it-white-house-readies-new-message-for-the-nation-on-coronavirus/ar-BB16j7Mm?ocid=spartan-ntp-feeds

And we will live with it, because we must. We might have been spared this, & the resulting drastic economic collapse, if we hadn’t had been battered by months of “It’s just like the flu” - “We have it under control” - "It will go away, like a miracle" - "We're doing a great job" - & debates about whether public health takes priority over people’s “freedoms” (whether it’s to bare their faces & share their germs at Texas bars, Florida spring break, Oakland BLM marches, Tulsa MAGA rallies, or whatever gathering for whatever purpose).

So here we are, five months into this calamity that didn't have to be, or might have been less disastrous, with a competent, informed, timely federal response. How much good would have come from constructive, unifying speech & behavior from you, Donald, & examples of good practices rather than childish tantrums? By the time you’ve gloated & strutted through your weekend of fireworks at Capitol Mall & Mt. Rushmore, the 3,000,000th U.S. case may be reported. Over 132,000 are dead, almost the population of Charleston, South Carolina. Both figures are about ¼ of the entire world total. How many did you kill, Donald? You’re not to blame for those who got sick before we knew much, while travel was still going on between the U.S. & China. But once we knew, & you failed to act, how many got sick & died on your watch?

In past years, our country helped pull the rest of the world through global crises & disasters of many kinds, because we took care of business at home, made sure we had the resources & people needed here, then shared our wealth and expertise with others. The world respected the United States - today it pities us. Once we had capable presidents, better leaders & better men that in your wildest dreams you don’t even have the right to envy. The Marshall Plan, Peace Corps, Alliance for Progress, & Thousand Points of Light came from such leaders. And now we have a “president” who cares nothing about his own country & people, let alone helping any others. You are good for nothing but to brag about your “success,” bicker & bash anyone who disagrees, distract & deflect to take our minds off what an abominably horrible president you are, play the victim & martyr & whine about how unappreciated you are.

You crave appreciation, Donald. I will never appreciate you more than on your last day in office, but not for any reasons you’d like. You will either turn over your office & its authority to the rightfully elected next president, or you will refuse & be escorted (or hauled) out by federal marshals acting on behalf of our Constitution. Either way, it cannot be one minute too soon. The next president will inherit your mess, but our country will have a chance to turn around & start recovering & being what every other president wanted & every American wants it to be. No matter who that is, that day & your departure will be a huge step back toward Making America AMERICA Again.

In King George III's address to Parliament, October 27, 1775:

Quote
The authors and promoters of this desperate conspiracy have, in the conduct of it, derived great advantage from the difference of our intentions and theirs. They meant only to amuse by vague expressions of attachment to the Parent State, and the strongest protestations of loyalty to me, whilst they were preparing for a general revolt. On our part, though it was declared in your last session that a rebellion existed within the province of the Massachusetts Bay, yet even that province we wished rather to reclaim than to subdue. The resolutions of Parliament breathed a spirit of moderation and forbearance; conciliatory propositions accompanied the measures taken to enforce authority; and the coercive acts were adapted to cases of criminal combinations amongst subjects not then in arms. I have acted with the same temper; anxious to prevent, if it had been possible, the effusion of the blood of my subjects; and the calamities which are inseparable from a state of war; still hoping that my people in America would have discerned the traiterous views of their leaders, and have been convinced, that to be a subject of Great Britain, with all its consequences, is to be the freest member of any civil society in the known world.

In President Trump's address to Americans, July 3, 2020:

Quote
We will expose this dangerous movement, protect our nation’s children from this radical assault, and preserve our beloved American way of life. In our schools, our newsrooms, even our corporate boardrooms, there is a new far-left fascism that demands absolute allegiance. This left-wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the American Revolution. In so doing they would destroy the very civilization that rescued billions from poverty, disease, violence, and hunger, and that lifted humanity to new heights of achievement, discovery, and progress. We will state the truth in full without apology. We declare that the United States of America is the most just and exceptional nation ever to exist on earth. We are proud of the fact that our country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and we understand that these values have dramatically advanced the cause of peace and justice throughout the world.

So, people who vote differently are "far-left fascists" who are designing to overthrow the American revolution? The hypocrisy is staggering. Oh, and "far-left" and "fascism" don't go together. See the trick there?  The projection?

This Independence Day, declare your own independence. Don't be a Trump Tory. Think for yourself. Don't get beguiled by oblique references to patriotism, history, or religion. Don't believe a POTUS who implies that Americans who vote for Democrats are the enemy of Americans who vote for Republicans. Don't believe that the present is the enemy of the past. We need unity, not more division. Pledge your allegiance to our Republic, not to president or party. We are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for ALL.

Has anyone looked much into this Jeffrey Epstein saga? And Trump's connections to him (not to mention Clinton and a whole other list of big names)? My head is spinning at the level of corruption and perversion in our supposed "leadership". I knew there was corruption with money and lobbying and that type of thing, but this is a whole different level.

Clinton and Trump are both cut from the same cloth.  Clinton was just a bit more clever in hiding his true nature, until Monica that is.

What appears to be magical thinking might simply indicate that someone is delusional.  :(

We are “in a good place” with regard to the pandemic & will be “in very good shape” in a few weeks. Just like we were in February, & in March, & in April, when it was just like the flu, was under control & would just go away because “we [meaning the royal we] are doing a great job.” Yippee!!!

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-fauci-coronavirus-surge-in-a-good-place/

The FDA director won’t defend that statement, but what does he know – he’s just an MD like Fauci & Birx.

https://www.businessinsider.com/fda-commissioner-wont-defend-trump-99-percent-coronavirus-cases-harmless-2020-7

And even if you get it, big deal, 99 of every 100 cases are HARMLESS! Just take your Clorox before bedtime.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/07/06/coronavirus-survivors-donald-trump-totally-harmless/5386254002/

Which means that of the one-day U.S. high of 60,000 cases on Tuesday, only 600 are going to be in really terrible shape. We can live with that.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/coronavirus-updates-us-hits-daily-record-of-60-021-new-cases-total-nears-3-million-florida-hospital-icus-reaching-capacity/ar-BB16tONZ?ocid=spartan-ntp-feeds

Anyway, our Supreme Leader has more important things to worry about than some dumb flu germ, like protecting our historical heritage. Since he approves of flying the flag that represents insurrection against the United States, he should be just as open to celebrating Benedict Arnold, Axis Sally, Julius & Ethel Rosenberg, & John Walker Lindh.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/trump-claims-confederate-flag-is-e2-80-98freedom-of-speech-e2-80-99-after-nascar-ban-it/ar-BB16sdfB

And great news for parents: the Supreme Leader is demanding that schools open for in-person classes in the fall. If you’ve always wanted your kids to learn how to handle adversity, what could be better than Coronavirus, or just having to worry about it?

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Trump-insists-schools-must-open-but-teachers-15391420.php

^^ A case of "magical thinking," or delusion?

I get that this will be sort of a hit and run:  I don't have the stomache for this thread.

But it goes to what I see as a huge problem:

Donald Trumps ACTUAL speech for July 4th https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-south-dakotas-2020-mount-rushmore-fireworks-celebration-keystone-south-dakota/

Washington Post report of Trump's speech https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-racism-white-nationalism-republicans/2020/07/04/2b0aebe6-bbaf-11ea-80b9-40ece9a701dc_story.html

And the analysis, required because mainstream media has infrequently and worseningly over the last four years reported anything about Trump fully and accurately  https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-press-on-mount-rushmore-11594162964?mod=hp_opin_pos_2

If we're going to trash talk those brave enough to put themselves in front of the populace for consideration to govern us, let's at least do it based on what actually happens, rather than the very skewed third hand reports from people whose words suggest they never even heard the words in the first place but want us to believe they did.
