A New Challenge
« on: April 07, 2020, 05:28:11 pm »
In the charter school world, principals and assistant principals are referred to as "executive director" and "assistant director." I have been serving as the assistant director at my school this year. In addition, I stepped in to teach a third grade class when we had a teacher who moved out of state a few months ago. Last night, I was informed by our school board that our Executive Director was let go. They asked me to be the acting director. So...that's a huge jump in responsibility in the middle of all this. I have to admit--I'm excited about the opportunity. It's one of the things I've missed about deployments in the military--crisis leadership. It energizes me!

Congratulations.  Your are likely aware of this, but often charter school directors are called upon to do all that "district office" stuff that regular school districts pay 5 or 6 other people to do.   ;)

Yep. I've already been doing some of it this year. We have an excellent service provider who handles payroll and benefits for us. So there's that. I need to hire an IT specialist next fall. All the technology stuff would use up at least half of my time, if I let it.

Congratulations!  It seems that move to Utah has been filled with a variety of tough challenges and multitudes of blessings! This one will probably be both - a tough challenge and a huge blessing for you, the staff and the children.

Could we convince you to become president of the United States?  ;D

Oh, Heavens no! I don't have the patience for political strategy. But thank you for the expression of confidence  ;)

Well, it's official. The school board offered me the permanent position of Executive Director, tonight. I accepted. Not really a change from what I've been doing as acting director, but it's nice knowing that it's official. Michelle and I both took substantial pay cuts when we moved from Texas to Utah. This puts us back on track :)

Well done! If you hadn't done the job well, they would not have asked, so be proud of yourself!
