Question about Windows 10 blank death screen
« on: March 31, 2020, 04:26:53 am »
My Windows 10 laptop froze on me last night & gave me the dreaded blank death screen (not blue Ė blank, with nothing but a cursor). It happened while I was surfing on the internet,

I tried Ctl-Alt-Del a few times, then turned the power switch off & back on, which didnít work. So I used my phone to research on the internet for a solution. I tried a couple of the suggested remedies: Windows-Ctl-Shift-B, & a couple others I donít remember now. They all said I should see something on the screen that would direct me, but all I saw was the blank background with only the cursor. I tried those things with & without the power cord, printer, & wireless mouse receiver plugged in. Finally I walked away to take a shower & let the stupid thing rest. Awhile later, I turned it back on, got the blank screen again, & turned the power switch off & then back on twice, one right after the other. That was the magic touch; it started right up in the regular mode, not Safe, & has been acting like nothing was ever wrong.

So my question is: what would cause the computer to freeze that way, & how can it be prevented? And is multiple switching off & on typically going to fix it? Mostly, I donít want it to happen again, because itís very disconcerting, especially at 11:00 p.m. when Iím trying to find out whatís going on with COVID, trying to submit tithing, doing work for my calling, & Iím not sure if my go-to computer repair shop will be open in the morning because of the uncertainty caused by the plague.

I have heard of and experienced this problem while using Facebook on Chrome browser.

I solved it by using a different browser.

I had to do a hard reboot, because the black screen would not go away.

And thus we have reached the extent of my expertise.

With a laptop, just tapping the power button generally does NOT turn it off, it puts it into sleep or hibernate mode. You will need to hold the power button down until you hear the entire machine shut down (generally 3-5 seconds). Wait 15-20 seconds, THEN turn it back on.

You might want to check to make sure you have the most up to date bios.   On an HP elitebook, that is what the tech did to fix it.  (If you updated windows 10 recently or didn't, it may be connect to one or the other.)

It started up fine this morning, & I did all the recommended update installations. one of them was a BIOS update. So I hope that works. This is not a good time for anyone's computer to decide it wants a furlough or sabbatical.   >:(

Thanks, everyone. :)
