We have likewise been authorised to administer to our own families. Administering to others will be at the direction of the Bishop and EQP.

Since two of my daughters are working today, and the Prophet has indicated the once a month is sufficient for the sacrament, we will probably not be having the sacrament today - but we are having the missionaries.

Virtual Sunday School / Virtual Sunday - Come, Follow Me
« on: March 15, 2020, 10:07:23 am »
Please use this Section for "Come, Follow Me", discussions. Keep each week's study to a single thread.

Other threads are permitted if they veer away from the central discussion of the week's study.

I will start threads for the coming weeks, in case people get ahead and want to put something in the forum.

The weekly threads are also linked to the Calendar here. So if you go to the little Month on the right you can click on a Monday for the week you want. I have moved the calendar from the bottom to the top to facilitate this.

General Discussion / Re: Needing directions to the Cabin

So I did the best I could at digging through the underlying database tables. I can tell you that there are about 66 Topics that at sometime were started and no longer exist. Some of those will be thread the originator deleted, I have done that myself in the past.

2,911 messages are no longer in the system. These will likely include the Cabin, Iggy's Ramblings, etc. Some will be messages people thought better of.

These are estimates based on index numbers that no longer exist in the messages and topics data tables.

How they disappeared I can not tell. It could have been malicious, but I doubt it. I may have happened due to an error during thread movement, this seems the most likely to me.

I am sorry, and there have now been attempts made to overcome this with the recycle bin approach. I will also try to create a backup process. I can not say when because I am snowed under at work at the moment. But I will create something that runs in my own systems are backs the database up to my local database.

If I had a backup I could have done the work very easily (it's the kind of thing I do as part of my real life). There isn't a backup facility I am aware of. Sorry. I know the Cabin mean a lot to many people here.

Forum News, Discussion, and Help / New Administrator/Moderator

Dear All,

Please welcome Roper as a new member of the Administration/Moderation Team. I believe we can all agree that his input has helped to shape the Charter, and the changes we are discussing.

Forum News, Discussion, and Help / Minor Changes
« on: January 14, 2020, 08:25:47 am »
I have made a few minor changes, which you may have noticed.

  • I have swapped Recent Posts List and Top Posters List order so that Recent Posts is at the top.
  • I have increased the number of recent posts displayed to 15. Often we have rapid turn around in one thread and can't see other recent posts. This should help.
  • I have added a list of the 15 most recent topics - for similar reasons to item 2

FYI - every post from Folk Prophet, who no longer is a member of the forum, was from the same IP address, and different from every post from TurkeyLurker, which all had their own IP address.

They were significantly different. So, unless the same person is posting as one person from work, and another at home - or using VPN to obscure their IP address - I am confident they are not the same person.

Having said that, I would hope that this kind of semi-accusation does not happen again in a thread and was a question asked of an Admin in private. I don't feel it is helpful, though I do understand the motivation.

I did not get the impression they were the same person.

Please Read / New Nauvoo Charter - please read and abide by
« on: September 17, 2019, 03:48:09 am »
The following charter has been drawn up by members of the forum for members of the forum to abide by in their discussions. Please ensure that you have read it, and follow its principles when posting here and New Nauvoo.

The Nauvoo Charter

As members of this Nauvoo forum, we share the experiences of life and service as disciples of Jesus Christ. We learn from each other to better serve our Lord and our brothers and sisters. The charter states our core beliefs and convictions as the foundation of our community. The charter also states expectations in conduct and communication. While all members are not required to share core beliefs, all members are required to adhere to the stated standards of conduct and communication. Violation of standards may result in warnings, suspension, or expulsion as determined by forum moderators.

We believe that God is our Eternal Father and that we are His children. In all of our communication and interactions, we treat each other as children of God.

We believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior. We seek to conduct ourselves as disciples of Christ.
We believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the organization of His church were restored through the prophet Joseph Smith. We sustain the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators. We support them as having authority to receive revelation to guide the Church. In exploring and discussing gospel doctrines and church policies, we proceed with the premise that prophets are inspired leaders called to speak for the Lord.

We participate in Nauvoo as equals. We bring to forum discussions such knowledge and ideas as we have gained through study and experience; however, we do not seek special privilege for our ideas. We may demonstrate our ideas with reference to scripture or to the published teachings of latter-day prophets, as well as through personal experiences and our own best reasoning; however, if our sources must remain private, then we should not contribute to the discussion.

We respect the fact that members come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and have differences in interpretation and opinion. We may prefer our own ideas and feel them to be well-supported by scripture and by latter-day prophets. At all times, we humbly admit that our own understanding may be limited, and that further light and knowledge will increase our understanding.

We avoid the spirit of contention. If we think that another’s ideas are contrary to the gospel, we do not strive to prevail in a debate or to argue that person into silence or submission. We set forth our own understanding with patience and kindness. As disciples of Christ, we are merciful to each other and assume that members speak and act with the best of motives.

We keep sacred those things which belong in the temple. We do not publicly discuss temple covenants. We do not quote temple teachings unless they can be found in scriptural sources which can be cited.

We welcome and encourage inclusive communication which expresses compassion, regard, and humor. We avoid divisive communication which expresses sarcasm, cruelty, and light-mindedness about sacred things. We refrain from using language that is generally regarded as coarse or blasphemous.

We seek unity, not division, among us. We emphasize our commonalities over our differences.

Welcome to Nauvoo!

Forum News, Discussion, and Help / Re: New Nauvoo Charter

Taking each of your questions, the following would be my preference. And, excepting any seriously opposing comments, I will enact later today.

Do we need to do a formal poll so we have a recorded vote?

I don't believe so. Anyone invested in this process has had their say. Anyone who chose not to, by their silence, has consented.

Does the charter get moved to a new thread as read only?

I will created a Thread in this section that is pinned and locked. There need be no comment on it - it is solely for information.

Do we keep the revision thread or move it to a new place?

I think it can stay for a while - for informational purposes. It probably wants to be locked - no further discussion could be considered useful, IMO.

What about the discussions of the politics thread which started this process?

I see little use for it now there is a Charter.

As I said, this will become "Policy" later today if there are no serious objections. This has gone on for quite some time. I think all that needs to be said, and been said. And since we have had two new members this weekend, needs to be acted upon.

I thought this would be an interesting way to find out about peoples' GC preparation, and also to try out polling.

Wading in with my Admin hat on...

When we lost our old home, and has to move to this one, we started this
thread. Nothing came of it then.

However, if someone wants to put together a Charter we can use the poll facility to vote on it.

News of the Church / Re: Temple
« on: January 08, 2019, 04:27:03 am »
I just feel the need to step in here with my other moniker.

As an admin here, and as a Temple Ordinance worker of 25 years, and as a priesthood leader of 30+ years, and as someone who has taught temple preparation for almost that entire time.

I do not believe that anyone has overstepped the mark on what may be discussed in terms of the sacred nature of the endowment. No specific wording, no signs, tokens or names.

For me, or at least the real Andrew R., being able to discuss these matters with different people that I have come to respect as much as, and possibly more than, the members of my own ward, is of great worth in my spiritual journey. Be assured that if someone does overstep one of the Admins will take steps.
