General Discussion / Come Follow Me silliness
« on: July 29, 2020, 10:47:39 am »
Last night we were reading in Alma 42 about justice and mercy. We were trying to explain how justice and mercy both have claim on a penitent person. My seven year old came to understand that justice and mercy were fighting over an individual. He knew how to solve this problem. He said, “They should just take turns.” He didn’t understand why we thought he was quite funny.

Virtual Sunday School / Mosiah 3:15 and a cool video
« on: April 19, 2020, 10:59:19 am »
This year I had an interesting impression as I read some of the scriptures in the Book of Mormon talking about how all of the knowledge of the Lord will fill the earth in the millennium. So many prophets such as Nephi, Moses, the brother of Jared, etc saw the whole history of the world. They were either forbidden to write about it or it was sealed up to be revealed in the millennium. My idea (maybe spiritual impression) was that these things will show how very involved the Lord was in all the doings on this earth—how He constantly was orchestrating and inviting for our benefit. We won’t recognize most of it until the millennium when He shows us.

And many signs, and wonders, and types, and shadows showed he unto them, concerning his coming; and also holy prophets spake unto them concerning his coming; and yet they hardened their hearts, and understood not that the law of Moses availeth nothing except it were through the atonement of his blood.

As I was reading Mosiah 3:15, it struck me how much the Lord is trying to teach and show us now. King Benjamin is telling the people that the Lord was using the law of Moses and many signs and miracles to prepare them for His coming and to teach them about Him. However, they hardened their hearts and chose not to see. I wonder how much we are missing as the Lord works in our day because we don’t look. I can see that I don’t always take the opportunity to ask and search for what the Lord might be desiring to share with me. To tie the two ideas together, I wonder if we seek for them we will see more of the hand of the Lord in our world today. Perhaps we will not be so surprised in that millennial day when His work is fully revealed. Just a thought.

Also, I came across this awesome video about the discovery of chiasmus in the Book of Mormon. The article gives a summary, but the video really shows how the hand of the Lord was involved in it.  Enjoy!

General Discussion / Just some thoughts

I recently read the article here: http://www.ldsliving.com/Surviving-a-Faith-Crisis-with-the-Help-of-Church-Members/s/80563

One of the things that struck me from the article was that those who are having a faith "crisis" often feel like they aren't sure they can trust the church or its leaders, whether local or high up. This is why it isn't helpful to refer them to the scriptures or to just encourage faith. Those sources can feel unreliable while they are working through things. I have been pondering the article's suggestion that we just love them and give them space to figure things out. Then I stumbled across the following in the Ensign:

Luann (name has been changed) faced a spiritual and moral struggle and reflected on her experience with others who comforted her: “They looked past my present person and saw my promising potential, the potential to become someone greater, wiser, kinder. I look back on my former self and sometimes cringe with a bit of embarrassment for my ignorance—a bit of shame for my transgressions and sinful ways. But the sting of embarrassment and shame is always followed by the healing balm that is grace, mercy, forgiveness, and love. When I see there were people around me, showering me with those things, the sting goes away. And I see they were helping me heal. Maybe it’s more accurate to say they were creating a safe environment around me—a cocoon of grace, maybe—where, within, the Savior, the Master Healer, could work on me. Changing me. Changing my heart.”

I love how she shared that those around her created a "cocoon of grace" so that she had the space and time to heal. I love that imagery and the concept that we can't fix anyone. We do best to make sure they have a place to go while the Savior does the work on them.

I have felt that I couldn't trust the church or its leaders in the last year because of how individuals I love have been treated. I have faith that the church in general is going where it needs to. But it sometimes feels like we leave casualties along the way. When I shared my sadness and concerns, the responses by other members weren't as helpful. More compassion and space for each other is definitely necessary. I have decided I want to try to help usher that in by sharing stories and experiences to help others around me begin to consider it. I know it will take time but at least I can feel I am part of the solution. It occurred to me that I also need to give a "cocoon of grace" to those who don't see this yet.  We truthfully all need one.

This last week as I was reading about Peter denying the Savior I noticed some things that seemed related. The Savior told Peter he would deny Him three times, yet He still brought Peter to the garden with Him. He didn't reject Peter because of it. The Savior recognized that this was all part of Peter's learning and conversion process. In the long run, Peter was still the prophet of the Church and the Savior gave him space to figure it out. I hope that I can follow the Savior's example and be patient and loving with all those around me.

General Discussion / Debt Advise

My husband (Zeta-flux) and I rented a vacation rental in June in the midwest. The home was originally listed on VRBO which is how we found it. It took a few months for us to get it all set up with the owners. By the time we set it up it was gone off the website so we did our arrangements off-site. They claimed it was because they were wrangling legally with the city. I found evidence online to support their claim. It was the best option by far for us to spend a month away from home. We signed a contract with the owners, but they were super slow to respond to any communication--if they responded at all. So much so that I was worried we would show up in Iowa and would find we had been scammed. I was pleasantly surprised that the house worked out great. However, we are struggling to get our $500 deposit back. They won't respond at all. If I were to do this again, I would do it differently. Now that we are where we are though, what options do I have? I figured it wouldn't hurt to get some opinions from the Nauvoo community.
