Creative Corner / Learning to Draw
« on: July 11, 2016, 10:23:54 am »
I posted this on facebook as well, so if you're on facebook, you might have seen it there. But not everyone here is on facebook, so I thought I'd post it here as well.

It started with this TED talk from a man who helps other people realize that they can, in fact, draw. You can watch that on YouTube.

Then there's this TED talk from an illustrator who did a drawing a day for a year as part of a self-learning thing. I'm no artist and I have no talent. I know real artists - I have a friend who, amongst other things, illustrates children's books. She has mad mad talent. My sister is also an artist - she paints, and beautifully so. I'm not an artist. I do stick figures. I can follow simple tutorials, sure, but left to my own devices, I do stick figures.

But. What can I achieve if I do a drawing a day for a year? What can you achieve if you do a drawing a day for a year? I'm thinking very seriously about doing this, starting in a few days.

Do you want to join me? You're more than welcome to. We can learn together. :)

I'll post my drawings (I'll be doing mostly digital drawings) on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/lmashton.art/ which will also end up on my facebook account at https://www.facebook.com/LMAshton. You can follow along at either place. If there's enough interest and others following along, we can post here as well. Assuming, of course, that I can figure out how to get photos to work here.

So. Is anyone in?

Nauvoo International / A Missionary By Himself...
« on: April 19, 2016, 12:53:10 am »
When we were in Bordeaux, France, on one of the trams, we saw an elder by himself, no companion. I looked around for his companion, nope. When he got off, he was by himself. He was busy talking to someone, or I would have introduced myself to him.

Is the whole they go in pairs thing not as strictly adhered to as I thought? Disclaimer: I have not served a mission, so this is really not my area of expertise.

General Discussion / Church in Dubai - help needed
« on: April 18, 2016, 05:10:29 am »
As usual, the LDS.org meetinghouse locator fails me.

I'm looking for the church in Dubai. Google maps says it's on Umm Hurair 2, Dubai. The meetinghouse locator on lds.org tells me there are no congregations in any parts of the UAE. https://www.mormon.org/meetinghouse# tells me there's a meetinghouse at Villa  59  Street 14C Al Safa 1    United Arab Emirates, which is an address that Google maps can't locate.

Does anyone have access to better information? Possibly an email address for, say, a bishop or branch president or other church leader in Dubai or the UAE who can provide me with actual good information? Pretty please with a cherry on top?

Technical Talk / A logo? A tag line?
« on: February 01, 2016, 11:23:46 pm »
It would be nice if we had a logo or something to pretty this place up. Any ideas on what we might want? Any volunteers for doing it?

Same for a tag line. You know, a few words to summarize what this place is about or who it's for. Ideas?

Introductions / LMAshton here, formerly known as quidscribis
« on: January 21, 2016, 10:03:00 pm »

I'm a middle-aged Canadian now living in Sri Lanka. I've also lived in New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia. And we're thinking of where we're headed to next...

I've been a member of old Nauvoo since 2002 or 2003. At any rate, it was shortly before I got married.

I'm chronically ill, so rarely make it to church. Having a virtual ward helps fill the gaps. :)
