General Discussion / Re: Iggy's Ramblings

Iggy, got it. I've heard of repeat cataracts, but thought they were fairly rare.

I was diagnosed with cataracts when I was 36. I'm now 50 and they're not yet ready for surgery. One of my brothers and my sister also got cataracts at the same age. I'm not looking forward to surgery when I need it.

Iggy, do you mean that your husband had cataracts and they went away on their own? That's... astonishing!

Some of my husband's family were in the areas where rioting and vandalism happened. One of them had four gas bombs thrown at his house, but luckily (very very luckily), they didn't work and no damage happened as a result. Others had their houses stoned. But that's the worst of it for the relatives.

Things have calmed down, people have been arrested. Sadly, a lot of the people in the mobs were young - as in, 18-30. People on twitter talked about how the racists were all older people and the younger generation is better - I wouldn't say that is necessarily the case given who was actually destroying property.

Social media is still blocked and will be until at least Friday. Part of that is because facebook doesn't do much of anything to remove hate speech from their site. I've reported more than a few groups that, in English, called for death and destruction to specific groups in Sri Lanka. According to facebook, they aren't in violation of facebook's community standards. The hate speech groups in Sinhalese are even less likely to be removed because facebook doesn't have anyone or enough people who can read Sinhalese to deal with them. The government of Sri Lanka has set up a meeting with Facebook to discuss these things. I doubt that anything will change.

Germany and another country in Europe ( I don't recall right now which one) have laws that state that hate speech needs to be removed (from facebook as well as everywhere else) within a certain time frame. Facebook doesn't care about that, and Germany's a powerful country. Why would they care about what a country like Sri Lanka says?

The violence is over, theoretically, for now. But I doubt it's really over completely. The hate speech spreads lies and misinformation about minority groups, and until those lies and misinformation and hate speech are squashed, the hate and destruction will continue. Sri Lankans aren't great at reining in their emotions and destruction.

General Discussion / Re: Question about your talents
« on: March 09, 2018, 09:55:42 pm »
I think what Dyany says is spot on. Recognizing that a talent (or strength) is a talent can be difficult. "Oh, no, I'm not talented. Drawing is easy." Well, no, drawing well isn't easy, it's just easy for YOU because you're good at it. And you've probably spent a lot of time honing that talent, possibly because someone, or a bunch of someones, along the way praised you for your drawing.

One of my superpowers is accounting. It's probably weird for people to think of accounting as a superpower, but hey, it is what it is. I'm really really really good at sorting out accounting messes, reconciling accounts, and figuring out what the real financial story is. I have always been able to balance accounts - corporate accounts involving hundreds of transactions in a month - to the penny. It's easier now as accounting programs have improved over the years, but I could do this back when it was me against the paper ledgers. And I took about 1/4 to 1/3 the time it took other people to do the same job.

It's based on other superpowers of mine - the ability to organize the heck out of things and a massive attention to detail combined with excellent math skills (not that accounting required higher level math at all). But I didn't really understand that my accounting ability was a superpower until the last few years. I mean, I knew I was good at it, but...

So it can take a long time for us to realize that we have superpowers. Sometimes, it takes other people pointing them out. Sometimes, it's about realizing that our superpowers might seem stupid or boring or commonplace or even "why would you ever think that was a superpower?", but it's a superpower nonetheless.

The riots are theoretically over, at least for now. I still have no idea of the damage - news inside Sri Lanka is not great. Social media is still blocked. Curfew in Kandy still in effect. But the bigotry and hate speech continues.

Last I heard, yesterday evening, it's now 150 homes, shops, and cars destroyed, but rioting and violence continued after that. I've read of two dead, but I don't know if that's the real count or those were just two that were mentioned. We have a real lack of information here as to what's really going on.

By order of the government, social media is shut down in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the police and army do absolutely nothing but watch the rioters when theyre Sinhalese. Last I heard, I think it was 15 homes and shops were destroyed and one boy burned to death. This is really not good. Fahims wondering if he should go to mosque on Friday. Im voting no. We have enough produce for another four or five days. We have enough food to last for a while, it just wont be as good or as nutritious as with fresh veggies.

Prayers for Sri Lanka, please. Rioting, mobs, vandalism. Sinhalese vs. Muslims with the Sinhalese being the instigators. The government declared a state of emergency yesterday, which means the army can act as police - theoretically, that will mean the violence can't spread as much. If it gets really bad, checkpoints will spring up everywhere like they did while the war was on.

Internet is shut off in Kandy, where most of this is happening. I have zero access to facebook - it was spotty in the morning, then shut down entirely an hour or two ago. I have no access to messenger, either. I suspect other social media services will follow suit. No idea how long any of this will last.

How's everyone doing? The critters are well-fed and happy. I stop by here fairly frequently to rest and they tend to pile on for massive affection. They were particularly affectionate today. I wonder if that's the chicken livers I brought with me? :D

LOL! Yes, it was my birthday, and yes, I was put in FB jail for thanking people for their birthday wishes. I'm out of it now. I was out of jail all of yesterday, too. Thank the lucky stars!

Thanks for the birthday wishes. :)
